Postage Stamp is a Masterpiece



In a Newton Record article December 7, 1966, this special holiday stamp was introduced as follows.

“Every envelope bearing the 1966 Christmas postage stamp will be a masterpiece,” postmaster J. O. Waldrop declared.

The special holiday stamp is a replica of a painting by Hans Memling, Felmish master of the Renaissance Era, now hanging in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D. C.

The stamp which is now on sale at the Newton Post Office was designed from the central portion of Memling’s oil, “Madonna and Child with Angels”, which was painted on wood about 1480.

Postmaster Waldrop notes that the use of stamps for the sending of greeting cards assures first class handling. That means that cards will be forwarded if the addressee has moved or will be returned if there is no return address.

This is the fifth in a series of holiday stamps and the Postal Service expects it to be another best seller. The initial order was for one billion, two hundred million stamps.

The postmaster estimates that 30,000 of the stamps will be sold locally.

The stamp design was unanimously recommended to Postmaster General Lawrence F. O’Brien by the Citizens Stamp Advisors Committee which passes on all stamps.



La-Z-Boy Bowling League Action

December 7, 1966, Van A. Lucas, sports writer, gave the action of the local La-Z-Boy Bowling League.

The opening night of action found three teams deadlocked for the lead position with identical 2-1 marks.

The Owls put in their early bid for the championship race by putting a 2-1 victory over the Alley Cats with Vince Marsh leading the way hitting a single high of 176 and totaling 471 pins. The high for the Cats was Faye Brantley with a 162-411 showing.

Jerry Griffin paced the point parade for a La-Z-3 in grabbing a pair of games from the Underdogs. Griffin had a back up 179 and 181 games for total 490 pins for the evening. Edwin Russell fired a consistent 158-158-152 for 469 in keeping to the Dogs in the contest.



Showing a host of power, the Spares bowled over the Gutter Rollers 2-1 with Gerald Halt hitting the early session high of 190 pins for one game and series high of 496 with ample aid from Jim Posey’s 464. For the Gutter Rollers, the high player was Mike Clay with a 142-409.
