Yesterday in Newton: Gratifying Record of Progress - 1904 Part II

NEWTON There was a building boom in 1904 because of the rapid growth of Newton. This week a list of construction owners names and costs are given as follows:

Residences Completed:

The $60,100 total readable on the Newton Record microfilm gives a picture of the total cost. Some of the figures were not so plain and I have attempted to preserve them here as much as possible. If you try to add it up, it may not be the same total.

Reese Price $1,200; W.P. Craft $1,050; A.M. Powe $650; M.L. Thomas; $850; G.F. Hayes $1,000; R.G. Walton $2,000; Lee Samsing $1,000; Mrs. J.A. Weathersby $900. Total is $8,650.

Contracted to Built At Once:

R.G. Rew $2,400; C.L. Pringle $500; W.L. Wilkerson $1,100; Milton Gary $1,00; H.W. Hoye $2,000. Total is $7,000.

Residences remodeled:

E.E. Powe $300; E.T. Abney $500; J.S. Davidson $300; E.P. Daughdrill $800; S.R. Powe $150. Total is $2,050.

New Business Structures:

C.R. Hoye (store) $11,000; I.M. Hoye (store) $10,000; H.W. Hoye (store) $3,500; Wilson and Tatum (store) $4,000; Dr. G.H. McNeill (addition to store) $2,650; Walton Bros. and Co. (warehouse) $600; Mississippi Baptist $900; Doolittle and Co. Perhaps the period immediately following the Civil War when the first progress was made. Some capital to Newton one merchant was Marine Walkins who had capital. Around 1871 we find Newton progressing. The dispute over the lands of Newton had been in Litigation for a long time.
