ECCC Lady Warriors whip Itawamba to improve to 7-0

DECATUR — East Central Community College’s Lady Warriors improved to 7-0 Monday night after posting a 70-50 decision over Itawamba Community College in the Brackeen-Wood Physical Education Building in Decatur.

East Central received a stiff challenge from the Lady Indians during first half action, as the score was deadlocked 25-25 at intermission. But the Lady Warriors took control early in the second half and cruised to the 20-point victory.

Freshman Mystee Dale of Choctaw Central was the top EC scorer with 14 points. Also scoring were Rashima Jenkins, a product of Airline High School in Bossier City, La., who had 10 points; Allison Phillips of Leake Academy, Alisa Matlock of Carthage, Tanesha Brown of Jackson Provine and Chotsani Henderson of Newton, all with eight each; Tawaytha Evans of Newton, seven; Alisha McAfee of Northwest Rankin, four; and Sha Coleman of Newton County, three.

Sanqueeta Meardith of Shannon had 15 points to lead the Lady Indians, who fell to 1-7.

The Lady Warriors, led by third-year head coach Bill Smith, will be gunning for their ninth straight victory against visiting Mississippi Delta Community College on Monday, December 3. Tip-off time is set for 6 p.m. at Brackeen-Wood.



Itawamba men 81, EC 77

In the men’s contest, second-year Warrior head coach Maurice Bowie faced his former boss Marty Cooper for a third time, and once again the Indians came out on top but by a slim 81-77 margin. Itawamba won both matchups last season but it took double overtime for the Indians to claim a 94-91 nail-bitter in Decatur. Cooper is a former EC head coach and led the Warriors to a state title in 1993.

East Central, which evened its record at 4-4 following the non-division battle, was led in scoring by Carthage product Josh Luckett who pumped in 20 points. Also scoring were Marquis Wilson of Delhi, La., 15; Darron Maxtion of Sparkman High School in Harvest, Ala., 14; Davarius “Scooter” Walker of Newton County, and Marico Jones of Forest, seven each; Joe Thompson of Morton, six; and Des Morales of Lake, Justin Brown of South Leake, Rod Lofton of Forest and Dre Dickinson of Meridian, two each.

Theron Jenkins, a product of Northwest Rankin, had 17 points to lead the 20th ranked Indians, who remain undefeated at 7-0.

The visitors led 40-31 at the break.

Next up for the Warriors is a non-division matchup with Mississippi Delta Community College on Monday, December 3. Tip-off time is set for 8 p.m. in the Brackeen-Wood gym.
