The nationally ranked East Central Community College women’s basketball team improved to 9-0 Thursday night after posting an 87-78 decision over Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville.
The Lady Warriors, ranked 10th in the latest NJCAA poll, closed out 2007 competition with a perfect 9-0 mark under third year head coach Bill Smith.
Tanesha Brown, a sophomore guard from Jackson Provine, led EC with 31 points. Also scoring were Alisha McAfee, 14, of Northwest Rankin; Rashima Jenkins, 10, of Airline HSigh School in Bossier City, La.; Tawayatha Evans, nine, of Newton; Jordan Patterson, seven, of Oak Hill Academy; Mystee Dale, six, of Choctaw Central; and Allison Phillips of Leake Academy and Chotsani Henderson of Newton, five each.
Erica Grayson of Corinth had 18 points to lead the Lady Tigers, who dropped to 3-5.
EC held a 53-36 advantage at halftime.
In men’s action, the Warriors’ were unable to overcome a 40-27 halftime deficit and fell 79-70 to the host Tigers. With the loss, EC fell to 5-5 under second-year head coach Maurice Bowie.
Marquis Wilson, a 6-6 sophomore forward from Delhi, La., led EC with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Also scoring were Josh Luckett, 12, Carthage; Dre Dickinson, eight, of Meridian; Darron Maxtion, seven, of Sparkman HS in Harvest, Ala.; Des Morales, five, of Lake; Marico Jones, four, of Forest; Joe Thompson of Morton and Justin Brown of South Leake, three each; Devarius Walker, two, of Newton County; and Rod Lofton, one, of Forest.
William Burdette of New Albany pumped in 18 points to lead the Tigers, who improved to 5-5.
The Lady Warriors and Warriors resume 2007-08 competition by traveling to Itawamba Community College on Thursday, January 3. Both squads begin South Division action by visiting Jones County Junior College on Monday, January 7. The first home games in 2008 are set for Thursday, January 10 against Meridian Community College. Tip-off times are 6 p.m. (women) and 8 p.m. (men) in the Brackeen-Wood Physical Education Building.
