St. Andrews beats Lake for second time, ends Hornets’ season at 5-6

LAKE All Bill Ingersoll could do Friday night was watch and wonder what could have happened if the Hornets could have put together an entire game.

St. Andrews broke open a 14-6 game and erupted for 29 second-half points to beat visiting Lake 49-18 Friday night in the opening round of the Class 2A playoffs.

Lake finishes the season with a 5-6 record, having lost three out of the last four games. St. Andrews improves to 9-2 on the season and will host Enterprise, 9-2, in second round action. St. Andrews also beat Lake in the season opener 17-6.

For Ingersoll, Friday night’s game reflected what the Hornets had done most of the season.

“The game was basically a microcosm of the season,” Ingersoll said. “We started out slow and came on in the second quarter with the big drive. But we just dug too big a hole early in the game with mistakes on offense and giving up the big play on defense.”

St. Andrews scored two first-quarter touchdowns and led 14-0 early.

Lake then responded with an 18-play drive that covered more than 10 minutes as Timothy Bridges scored on a 16-yard run to cut into the St. Andrews lead. The try for two failed and St. Andrews led 14-6.

But any thoughts of an upset were soon put to rest as William Mayfield broke loose on a 65-yard run right before the half to give St. Andrews a 20-6 lead at the half.

The Saints seized control in the third quarter when Elliott Varney hit Greg McMillon on a 25-yard pass play to make the score 28-6.

Lake cut into the lead when Brandon Gibbs hit Timothy Bridges on an 81-yard touchdown pass to make the score 28-12 in the third.

After St. Andrews made it 35-12 with another touchdown pass from Varney, Jeremy Johnson scored on a 10-yard run to make the score 35-12 in the fourth.

St. Andrews added two fourth-quarter scores as Varney hit a 30-yard touchdown pass and the Saints added a late rushing touchdown for the final margin.

Demario Combs had 103 yards on 17 rushes to lead the Lake offense while Johnson had 56 yards on 18 carries. Gibbs was 7-of-16 passing or 145 yards with one touchdown.

David Murray, playing with a cast on his arm, led the Lake defense with 11 tackles while Maurice Williams had seven tackles.
