NEWTON LakeFest proved to be a successful day despite the rain earlier on Saturday. Vendors set their tents up and even though it was muddy that didn’t seem to stop many from shopping, eating and listening to the politicians and talent that appeared on stage.

“We had a great day, and probably the biggest crowd we have ever had,” Lake Mayor Larry Townsend said. “The vendors did good and even though it was muddy everyone seemed to understand.”

WOKK’s Awesome Angie Denney was there with the Mellow Yellow Music Machine along with political speakers U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker and Gregg Harper, candidate for U.S. Congress for the Third District who made an appearance at the festival greeting and speaking to the crowd.

There was also a talent show contest for ages six to 17 and 18 and older. In the six to 17 age group Laura Nichols won the $1,000 first place and Faith Westberry won $300 for second place. Both girls are from Lawrence. In the group 18 and older first place winner was Courtney Gammill from Lawrence who won $1,000 for first place and Bailee Viverette from Union who won $300 for second place.

Mayor Townsend said he would like to thank the sponsors of LakeFest who were: Scott County Times, Joe McGee Construction, Newton County Bank, Bank of Forest, Community Bank, M & W Repair Shop, H & W Auto Parts, Sorey Tire Company, Sanico Rental Service, M & K Convenience Stores, D & L Auto Sales, Armadillo Auto Salvage Inc., The Newton Record, Waste Management, Vowell’s Supermarket, Simmons Erosion, G & M Trucking, Goodhope Supermarket, Ed Davis Motors, James Taylor Used Cars, Old South Brick, Taylor Auto Sales, Billy Horton Plumbing Service, Branding Iron, Batte Hollingsworth Lumber, Forest Ford, Southside Mart, B & M Auto Sales and Special Thanks to: Mapps Florist, Forest Florist , Studio of Flowers.
