Newton County Board of Supervisors met on Monday and among topics discussed was the problem with Cogongrass in the county. Bruce Jackson from the Department of Agriculture was on hand to provide information to the board on the effects of Cogongrass and how to eliminate it.
“This grassy weed spreads by seed and vegetatively,” Jackson said. It started out as an eradication program but has become a supression program.”
If a landowner has Cogongrass on his property he can give me a call and I will come out and verify that it is Cogongrass. He can fill out an application and we will furnish enough chemical to treat that site, with no charge to the homeowner, Jackson said. It will be the responsibility of the homeowner to do the treatment.
“We thought it would be an eradication program but there is more here than we realized and it has been here for a long time,” Jackson said.
Jackson said if you are a homeowner and have this problem with Cogongrass you may call him at 601-683-3446.
