State Games brings tourists to Newton

Once again State Games of Mississippi has begun. Not only does this event impact the city of Meridian, but the city of Newton as well.

With Newton located just 30 miles from Meridian, many tourists drive those extra miles to find a home away from home because they understand that Meridian cannot accommodate everyone.

Angie Burks, executive director of the Newton Chamber of Commerce, feels that the State Games impacts Newton and the fact that it’s a smaller town is beneficial too.

“All of our hotels are booked,” said Burks. “ I think it is a wonderful, wonderful attraction and I am very proud to be apart of this event and have hopes of being a part of it in the future.”

In addition to the Chamber of Commerce, Harvey Curry, Newton Police Chief, also embraced the coming of State Games this year.

“I think it’s a great thing for the kids and it gives the young people a chance to improve their talent,” said Curry.

Although many tourists stay in Newton during State Games there is not a noticeable change in population. As far as how the police department is being impacted, Curry said that more police officers are on patrol because of the increase in traffic.

“We want to make sure that the tourists and residents stay safe,” he said.

As a result of this event, various businesses are also being affected. Boro’s Restaurant is one particular restaurant that benefits from the State Games. Best known for its hamburger and ribeye steaks, Boro’s Restaurant knows how to pull in a crowd of hungry people.

Peggy Brenton knows this because she has been a waitress there for 22 years.

“We receive quite an increase in tourists when the State Games come every year,” Brenton said.

Although most businesses have special sales or give out discounts during events like the State Games, Boro’s has not had to do that.

“There’s nothing special that the manager adds for tourists,” Brenton said. “We always have the regular menu and people order what they like because no one forgets good food.”

When asked about her views concerning State Games, Brenton said that it’s wonderful for the people and restaurants especially since we are currently in a recession.
