It's Tiger Vision 2008

NEWTON Newton Public Schools kicked off their new school year by holding the 2008 Tiger Vision Back-To-School Gala at the Historic Newton Depot on Monday.

The event was held so parents and students could meet the principals, Superintendent Mary Kate Garvin, the central office staff and the Tiger Athletics coaching staff.

“This is the first year our back-to-school gala has been held anywhere but the school,” Assistant Superintendent Dr. Virginia Young said. “We decided to have it at the Depot this year so the community could be involved with the schools and see what we are planning for the new school year.”

Information was also available from booths set up by East Central Community College, Weems Community Health Services, Educational Talent Search, Friends of Children of Mississippi and the Athletic and Band Boosters.

“My vision as a principal is to get the community involved with our schools,” High School Principal Sherrod Miller said. “I am so happy to see the crowd that is here today, this is just wonderful.”

Outside the Depot students were having fun playing games, winning prizes, having their faces painted, enjoying popcorn and cold sodas while the Newton High School Tiger Band performed. Students also got to meet the Newton Tiger mascot and the 2008-2009 cheerleaders.

Following the gala each school campus held an Open House where the parents and students could meet the teachers, tour the campus and classrooms, pick up schedules and test scores, and new students could pick up their registration packets.
