There will be a campus-wide Open House scheduled for Newton County High School and Newton County Middle School on Monday, September 8, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Parents and guardians of middle school and high school students are encouraged to visit the classrooms of their students and meet the teachers and administrators.
The introduction and organizational meeting of the Newton County High School Big “O”, a parent, guardian, teacher organization, will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the high school library. The purpose of the Newton County High School Big “O” is to involve all parents/guardians/families/teachers in the academic success of each student’s education.
The Middle School PTO, organized in the 2007-2008 school year, will meet at 6:00 p.m. on the same night in the middle school library. All middle school parents/guardians are encouraged to attend.
At the recent Newton County School Board meeting, the board approved an academic shirt and a designated weekday that the shirts may be worn on the NCHS and NCMS campuses. The official shirt for 2008-2009 “S.W.A.T.” (Students with Awesome Thinking) shirt can be worn on Thursdays by students and faculty. If students choose not to wear the 2008-2009 academic-themed shirts, the standard dress code for Thursday will remain in effect.
Janine Vincent, Parent Liaison and Dropout Prevention Team Leader for Newton County Schools, said, “I certainly wan to thank the Newton County School Board for rewarding students on the middle school and high school campuses by providing this day to give great emphasis to academics.” She continued, “With everyone working together, statistics prove that the graduation rates will increase and the dropout rates will decrease.
The middle school campus is tying the Positive Behavior Support initiative into literacy by rewarding S.W.A.T. shirts to any middle school student who collects $50 of Cougar Cash in the month of September. Students are awarded these bucks when caught by a teacher or administrator providing positive support on campus.
