Musgrove makes rounds in Decatur on campaign trail

Cheryl Owens/News Editor
The Newton Record

NEWTON Former Mississippi Gov. Ronnie Musgrove stopped by the Newton County Courthouse in Decatur on Thursday while campaigning for the senate seat that was vacated by Trent Lott last year. Musgrove, a Democrat, is running against Republican U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker, who was appointed to Lott’s post by Gov. Haley Barbour when Lott retired.

“It is an exciting time for me but unfortunately a difficult time for people,” Musgrove said. “Washington has forgotten what its business is, its business is the peoples business. Instead of the peoples business they have been taking care of special interests.”

As a result people are being squeezed at the gas pumps and grocery stores and unemployment is substantially higher now than the day I left office. And because of these trade agreements like NAFTA and CAPTA and the free trade with China we are losing jobs to Asia, and my opponent is for all that Musgrove remarked.

“Right now today we owe more money to China than anytime in history,” Musgrove said. “We have mortgaged our future to countries like China and India along with our children’s future. We have got to stop the out of control spending in Washington and get this budget and the economy back in order and get an energy policy that includes lowering the price of gas immediately by cracking down on Wall Street speculators.”

My opponent has been in Washington for 14 years and we have no energy policy, no health care reform, no immigration policy (stopping illegal aliens) and we have no housing solution and the spending is out of control, Musgrove said. In my opinion the people want someone who will stand up for Mississippians values and put people first, not a political party, insiders or special interests.
