The Newton Lions Club will be having a pancake supper on Thursday, Dec. 4 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Newton Depot right before the Christmas parade.
According to Lions Club member Robbie Robertson, this is the first time for the Lions Club to have a pancake fundraiser.
“We normally sell light bulbs but we thought we would do something different this year, since more and more people are going to fluorescent bulbs,” Robertson said. “We will start serving pancakes, sausage, orange juice and coffee at 4 p.m. with Mrs. Rachel Beeland serving her secret recipe pancakes. It has been said around town you can’t have a pancake cooking without Mrs. Rachel.”
Robertson said this is an important fundraiser for the Lions Club.
“We have done more this year with eyeglasses, we have gone into the schools doing eye examinations and the more you do the more requests you get,” Robertson said. “The proceeds will not only go to the local Lions Club to help those who need eyeglasses, but to the state eye bank as well for vision transplants and research.”
Robertson said he would also like to encourage anyone with old eyeglasses to bring them to the fundraiser because they are currently putting together a drive to take the eyeglasses to the state office.
After the eyeglasses get to the state office they will be restored, reconditioned and re-evaluated for prescription, then they will be recycled and distributed among the needy in Central and South America.
Tickets for the pancake supper can be purchased for $5 from any Lions Club member, at The Newton Record, or both Newton County Bank locations. Walk-ups are welcome.
