NCA teams grab wins over Russell, Heidelberg

Both the Generals and Lady Generals of Newton County Academy went 2-0 on the hardwood last week, knocking off Heidelberg Academy and Russell Christian Academy.
The Lady Generals improved to 8-3, while the Generals upped their record to 4-2.
After going to Sylva-Bay Academy on Tuesday, NCA will visit Wayne Academy Thursday at Waynesboro.
NCA will then be off until Dec. 14 when Ben’s Ford Christian Academy of Bogalusa, La., comes to Decatur.

NCA girls 75, Heidelberg 44
Four players scored in double figures as the Lady Generals routed Heidelberg on Nov. 27 at Decatur.
NCA jumped out to a 23-12 first quarter lead, then pulled out to a 42-25 halftime advantage. NCA led 59-35 to start the fourth quarter.
Abby McMillan led NCA, 7-3, with 19 points. Anna-Rose Blaylock scored 12, Anna Williams added 11, Casey Rowzee had 10, Kate Mason seven, Leanne Killen six, and Hanah Parker and Brittany Brown both had four.
Raven Cook led Heidelberg with 15 points. Amy Tackett scored 14 with Emily Harwell and Brittany Yelverton getting six each.

NCA boys 39, Heidelberg 30
The Generals improved to 3-2 with the Nov. 27 win over the Rebels at Decatur.
Heidelberg led 12-5 after one quarter, but NCA rallied to take a 17-16 lead into halftime. The Generals led 26-24 by the end of the third quarter.
Cody Cotten and Landon Burt both scored 13 points to lead NCA. Brody Thomas scored eight and Rob Roberts added five.
Thomas also had 10 rebounds and six assists. Burt had eight rebounds and Roberts and Ryan Collins both had five boards.
Heidelberg got eight points each from Derek Beach and Blake Hitt and six each from Joseph Collins and Trae Barker.

NCA girls 73, Russell 17
Casey Rowzee scored 22 points, 18 in the first quarter, as the Lady Generals crushed Russell Saturday in Meridian.
NCA grabbed a commanding 28-2 lead in the first quarter and increased its lead to 39-7 going into halftime. The Lady Generals were up 59-17 by the end of the third quarter, then blanked Russell over the final eight minutes.
NCA, 8-3, also got 15 points from Abby McMillan, eight each from Anna-Rose Blaylock and Cora Boatwright, six each from Leanne Killen and Anna Williams, and four from Rachael Miller.
Russell got six points from Rachel Knight and five from Renee Knight.
NCA boys 61, Russell 36
NCA outscored Russell 37-20 in the second half of Saturday’s game at Meridian.
The Generals led 15-8 after one quarter and held a 24-16 lead going into halftime.
A 21-9 advantage in the third quarter enabled NCA to expand its lead to 45-25 heading into the final period.
Brody Thomas scored 23 points and had 18 rebounds and five assists to lead the Generals as they improved to 4-2.
Rob Roberts tossed in 14 points, Landon Burt scored 12, and Cody Cotten had 10.
Burt and Ryan Collins had seven rebounds each with Roberts getting five. Burt also had five assists.
The Russell Warriors got 12 points from Ross Moore, eight from Jonathan Eggleston, and seven from William Knight.
