Lady Generals take two division wins

Marty Stamper/Staff Reporter
The Newton Record

DECATUR The Newton County Academy Lady Generals cruised to lopsided wins over Sylva-Bay Academy and Wayne Academy in last week’s basketball action to improve to 10-3.

“I’m real proud of them,” NCA coach Tim Bean said. “We’re taking care of the ball pretty good. Turnover-wise, we’re probably half the amount of turnovers the other teams are having against us because of the press.

“We’ve started a new defense this year — the run and jump. That has really helped us a lot, changing up from the diamond press to that. People are not ready for that and it’s helped us a lot.”

The Generals split two games, knocking off Sylva-Bay and losing in overtime to Wayne.

The Generals entered this week with a 5-3 record.

“They are doing very good,” Bean said. “We have eight on the team and I’m pretty well having to play five the whole ball game.”

NCA hosts Ben’s Ford Christian School of Bogalusa, La., on Friday in this week’s only action. Next week, NCA goes to Winston Academy on Dec. 17 and to Kemper Academy on Dec. 21.
