Newton County tennis second in state

The Newton County tennis team finished second in the Class 3A state tennis tournament.
Leading the way for the Cougars was the mixed doubles team of Scooter Walker and Dru Anderson, who won the 3A title. Corinth won the team Class 3A title as they finished with 17 points while Newton County finished second with 13 points.
Walker and Anderson won a spirited contest against Drew Edwards and Melissa Easley of Amory by the score of 7-5, 3-6, and 6-2. Walker and Anderson cruised to the finals as they won 6-4, 6-0 in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-0 in the quarter finals and 6-2, 6-0 in first round action.
Also playing in the finals was the girls doubles team of Elise Gibbs and Cassie Munn. They lost to Abby Lambert and Christina Puckett 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 in the finals. Gibbs and Munn didn’t have such an easy time as they fought their way to the championship game. They won 7-6(6), 6-4 in the semifinals against Mooreville, 6-3, 6-4 against North Pontotoc and 6-1, 6-4 against Humphries County.
Several other Newton County players made it to the semifinals as well.
In boys singles, Daniel Ospina lost to Kenny Little of Cornith 6-1, 6-4. In girls doubles, Juliane Weber lost to Haley Huggins of Cornith 6-1, 6-2.
In boys doubles, Austin Scoggin and Darius Walker lost to Josh Shidler and Juan Ruiz in the semifinals by a score of 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.
