Both Newton basketball teams came away with Division 5-2A wins on Dec. 17 at Union.
The Newton girls won 49-39 in the opener with the Tigers taking an 86-51 victory in the boys’ contest.
“I don’t think either team played that great but both played good enough to win,” Newton coach Crandal Porter said. “The boys had to get it in gear in the second half. The boys game was a lot like Lake, they didn’t play well early but got rolling late. I thought Brandon (Gill) played well. He’s been missing some easy shots and finally got some things to start falling. He quit worrying about getting fouled and getting his shot blocked and just put the ball in the goal.”
Newton returns to action Dec. 27-27 in the Bay Springs Tournament. Newton will take on Bay Springs Thursday with the girls playing at 7 p.m. and the boys at 8:30 p.m. On Friday, Newton will take on Heidelberg starting at 4 p.m. On Saturday, Newton will take on Taylorsville starting at 1 p.m.
Union will be off until Jan. 3 when the Yellowjackets and Lady Jackets take part in the Enterprise Round Robin along with Enterprise, Clarkdale, and West Lauderdale.
