NEWTON Jacob Ray Gibbs

Services for Jacob Ray Gibbs were held Friday, Feb. 2 at Ott and Lee Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ryan Culpepper officiating. Burial was in Hazel Baptist Church cemetery.

Gibbs, 78, of Lake, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007, in his home. Survivors include his sons, David Gibbs and his wife, Carolyn, and Mike Gibbs and his wife, Michelle, all of Lake; a sister, Lee Pinson and her husband, Huey, of Seminary; sisters-in-law, Jean Gibbs of Lawrence, Inez Gibbs of Philadelphia, Tabitha Williams and her husband, Charles, of Hickory and Maurine Williamson and her husband, Charlie, of Collinsville; grandchildren, Carmen Robinson and her husband, Thomas, Kristin Boykin and her husband, Sammy, Brandi McDill and her husband, Brad, Justin Gibbs and his wife, Lacey, Jacob Gibbs and Josie Gibbs; great-grandchildren, Casey Robinson, Cody Robinson, Chase Robinson, Levi Boykin, Julie Boykin, Braxton McDill, Bailey McDill and Drew Gibbs; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, “Red” Frances Melfaline Hurst Gibbs; parents, Levi and Carrie Hollingsworth Gibbs; two sisters and two brothers.

He was a native of Newton County and had been a resident of the Gibbstown Community for most of his life. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army. He served in World War II and the Korean War.

He loved watching football and traveling.

Pallbearers were Danny Edmonds, Michael Edmonds, Michael Wooten, Thomas Robinson, Sammy Boykin and Brad McDill.

Honorary pallbearers were Justin Gibbs, Jacob Gibbs, Doyle Gibbs, Billy Joe Gibbs, Chester Dearing and Zack Edwards.



Bobbie Nell Burks

Services for Bobbie Nell Burks were held Saturday, Feb. 3, at 2 p.m. at James F. Webb Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Terrell Stringer and Guy Odom officiating. Burial was in Hickory Cemetery.

Mrs. Burks, 77, of Petal, formerly of Hickory, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007, at Wesley Medical Center in Hattiesburg. She was a retired clerk for the U.S. Postal Service and owner of Burks Food Store in Hickory. She was born in New Orleans. She was a member of Hickory Baptist Church and Calvary Baptist Church of Petal. Survivors include her son, William T. Burks and his wife, Joann, of Petal; a brother, Jack Thomas Culpepper of Gulfport; grandchildren, Raland Burks of Hattiesburg, Amber Burks Cone of Bassfield and Davey Burks of Hickory and one great-grandson, Jackson Bradley Cone of Bassfield.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William T. Burks; parents, Irvin and Bobbie Ridgeway Murphey.

Pallbearers were Johnny Burks, Sam Burks, Tommy Burks, Billy Joe Cornett, Danial Cornett and Jim Atwood.

Honorary pallbearer was Curly Burks.



Tommy Ray Ellis

Services for Tommy Ray Ellis were held Wednesday, February 7, 2007 at 3 p.m. at Milling Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rusty Walton officiating. Burial will be in Greenland Baptist Church Cemetery.

Ellis, 45, of Little Rock, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007, in his home.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellis; his mother, Henrietta Cravens; daughters, Tammy Goings, Mary Arinder, Amanda Murphey and Missy Ellis; six grandchildren; one brother; one son-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his father and a brother.



Tommy F. Culpepper

Services for Tommy F. Culpepper were held Friday, Feb. 2, at Ott and Lee Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Larry Laird and Steve Robinson officiating. Burial was in Pine Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery.

Culpepper, 49, of Lawrence, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2007, at Rush Foundation Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Culpepper of Lawrence; his mother, Thelma Jean Culpepper of Lawrence; a son, Chris Culpepper and his wife, Bethany, of Newton; a daughter, Letisha Culpepper of Newton; step-son, Butch Meaders Jr., and his wife, Tammy, of Newton; a step-daughter, Kristy Cleveland and her husband, Scott, of Huntsville, Ala.; sisters, Barbara Olson and her husband, Keith, and Rhonda Shoemaker, all of Long Beach and Sherry Lang and her husband, Mike, of Lake; grandchildren, Summer Culpepper, Wynter Culpepper, Chase Martin, Chance Culpepper, Christopher Meaders, Kayla Meaders, Drew Neele and Cody Needle; 2 nieces, Tonya Evans and Stephanie Craig.

He was a lifelong resident of the Gibbstown Community in Newton County. He was a member of Pine Ridge Baptist Church and loved to play the guitar and sing. He worked for nine years at the Mississippi Department of Transportation in Newton. He was an avid outdoorsman, who loved to hunt and fish. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Air Guard and Army National Guard.

Pallbearers were Wade Cooksey, Shannon Gibbs, Tim Gibbs, Pepper Culpepper, Paul Evans, Stacy Wilkerson, Butch Meaders and Thomas Buffington.

Honorary pallbearers were his nephews, Jason, Justin and Jonathan Shoemaker, Patrick Craig, Jesse Lang and Shelby Lang.



Florence Esther

Cornett Everett

Services for Florence Esther Cornett Everett were held Saturday, Feb. 3, at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church with the Revs. Thomas Laird and Winnie McMahan officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. James F. Webb Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Everett, 89, of Hickory, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007, at Rush Foundation Hospital.

Survivors include her daughters, June Gibson and her husband, Gary, of Collinsville, Emma Lucille Robinson and her husband, A.G., of Pascagoula and Annette Pugh and her husband, Bobby, of Hickory; sons, Charles Everett and his wife, Faye, of Columbus and Jerald Preston Everett and his wife, Rita, of Clinton; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and a sister, Lorene Chaney of Hickory.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Hulon Everett and parents, Charlie and Talitha Long Cornett.

She was a retired nurse’s aid at Newton Con-Va-Rest Nursing Home. She was born in Newton County and was a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church.

Pallbearers were Doug Cox, Keith Hayes, Patrick James, Preston Everett, Gary Gibson II, Curtis Robinson and Larry Crader.

Honorary pallbearers were Raymond McMullan, Richard Harris, James Otis Swearingen, Bobby Caldwell and Arliegh Allen.



Freddie Joe Ogletree

Services for Freddie Joe Ogletree were held Wednesday, February 7, 2007 at 1 p.m. at Milling Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Bobby Ferguson and Len McRaney officiating. Burial will be in Union City Cemetery.

Ogletree, 65, of Union, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007, at Laird Hospital in Union.

Survivors include his daughters, Kim Doege, Rhonda Cooper and Michelle Lyon; one brother; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 11 a.m. until service time at the church.
