Sheryl Lynn Monk Coady
Sheryl Lynn Monk Coady, age 51, passed away on February 15, 2007 at Rush Hospital in Meridia. James F. Webb Funeral Home was in charge of her arrangements.
She was the wife of Edward Coady, the dau-ghter of Gwenneth and Gerald Monk, a sister to Ann and David Foreman, Rebecca and David Owens, and Russell and Cindy Monk. Indulgent Aunt to Gwen and Matt Pervis, Matthew Owens, Erica Foreman, Zachery Foreman, Jessica Monk, Roberta Monk and Great Aunt to Olivia Bradford. Lynn was also stepmother to Shannon, Tammen, and Colin Coady, and for a year to Matt Felgner of Germany.
She was born in Jackson on Nov. 21, 1955, she was raised in Lake, MS, where she graduated from High School. She attended MSU before pursuing a career in mortgage banking. Upon her marriage to Ed, Lynn moved to the Chicago, IL area where she was a former vice president for Dovenmuehle Mortgage Company. Also during this time she held conditional vice presidencies for institutions ranging from Am South Bank to Morgan Stanley. Her greatest joy was her home and garden at 800 West Church Street in Newton, which she had undertaken to renovate. She was pleased to be able to hostess a Rube family reunion at her home. She was an accomplished cook, often using herbs from her garden. She was a woman at ease whether at her condo in Chicago or at her home in Newton. She graced both North and South with her too short life and will be missed by all.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to East MS Animal Rescue, P.O. Box 8013, Meridian MS 39303.
Alfred Howell Bartles
Composer, arranger, cellist, and jazz pianist died on December 28, 2006 at his home in Nashville. He was 76. A native of Nashville and graduate of Hillsboro High School, the University of Mississippi and Ohio University. Bartles spent fifteen years in New York City, composing, teaching, and performing jazz piano and classical cello. Four years (1969-1973) in Germany were followed by four at Tennessee Technological University and twenty more in Germany until he retired and returned to Nashville. One of his best known compositions, “Music for Symphony Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble,” was commissioned by the Nashville Symphony and reveals his remarkable mastery of both the jazz and classical idioms. He is survived by his wife, Martha Smith Bartles; by two daughters, Isabel Bartles and Julia Bartles (Stephen) Emahiser, and two grandchildren, Nathan and Irene Emahiser. A memorial service was held Tuesday, January 2, 2007 at 5 p.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church, on Hillsboro Road. Memorial contributions may be made to the Linden Corner School.
Katie Ruth ‘Nana’ Doolittle
Mrs. Katie Ruth “Nana” Doolittle 75, was born February 18, 1932. Nana was escorted back to heaven Monday evening February 19, 2007.
Mrs. Doolittle made her transition in the loving embrace of family and in the sanctity of her home. Mrs. Doolittle was a lifelong citizen of Mississippi and a resident of the Gulf Coast since 1955. As a young lady, Katie Ruth worked along side her mother at a laundramat where she met her first and only love H.L. Doolittle. Their love for each other flourished for over 53 years of matrimony and began at first sight. Mrs. Doolittle lived her life in the service of our Lord through temperance, piety, and devotion to her family.
Mrs. Doolittle fought four arduous battle with cancer and beat them into remission. She overcame a multitude of strokes and courageously persevered through debilitating illnesses. She was the rock that adversity smashed its self upon, and was the lighthouse of the Doolittle family.
She in preceded in death by her mother, Mary Jane Creech, her father, Lloyd Creech, and her birth mother, Vera Mae Robinson.
She is survived by her husband, Hugh Larry Doolittle, her daughter, Tammy Dianne Doolittle, and a grandson, Jimmy Glenn Doolittle.
A graveside service was held Thursday, February 22, 2007 at 1 p.m. at the Doolittle Confederate Cemetery in Newton. Riemann Memorial Funeral Home, Highway 49N in Gulfport, was in charge of arrangements.
Clarene Smith James
Services for Clarene Smith James were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 22, 2007 at Beulah Baptist Church. Rev. Keith Ramage officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Ms. James, 90 passed away Monday, February 19,2007 at Jeff Anderson Regional Hospital.
Survivors include: one daughter; Nadine Chaney and husband Billie of Little Rock, two sons; Frankie James and wife Mineko of Columbus, Ms and Bobby James and his wife Janie of Little Rock. Eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, one sister; Dot Shealy Cooper of Robertsdale, Alabama.
Ms. James is preceded in death by her husband, B.L. James, parents; Lee and Macie Smith, Brother; Jimmie Smith and two sisters; Helen Ingram and Catherine Harbour. Ms. Clarene was a life long member of Beulah Baptist Church.
Melba Odell Loper Humphreys
Services for Melba Odell Loper Humphreys was held Sunday, February 25, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Barham Chapel in Newton, with the Rev. Sara Windham officiating. Burial was in Hull Memorial Methodist Church Cemetery in Lawrence with Barham Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Humphreys, 88, of Lawrence died Friday, February 23, 2007 at J.G. Alexander Nursing Home.
Survivors include: daughters; Mary Humphreys Everett, Decatur, Barbara Humphreys Haralson and husband Billy of Conehatta. Sons; Benny Humphreys and wife Nita of Union, Thomas Humphreys and wife Sylvia of Newton, Jimmy D. Humphreys and wife Voncille of Hattiesburg, Jerry Humphreys and wife Betty of Lawrence, 15 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren, brother L.B. Loper and wife Alice of Merigold, sisters; Thelma Holiday, Newton, Johnnie Roberts, Newton, Ruth Lewis, Holcomb, numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by husband, James L. “Sonny Boy” Humphreys and grandson; Danny Ray Haralson.
Pallbearers were grandsons.
Nancy Mavis Griffin
Services for Ms. Nancy Mavis Griffin were held Monday, February 26, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Barham Chapel in Newton. Burial was in Macedonia Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, with Barham Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Ms. Griffin, 89, of Decatur died Saturday, February 24, 2007 at Woodland Court Personal Care in Newton.
Survivors include brothers; Jack G. Griffin and wife Nina of Starkville, Buner Lee Griffin and wife Sara of Decatur, sister, Euner Lee Johnson of Austwell, Texas, sister-in-law Bobbie Nell Griffin of Newton, numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by parents; Austin and Sarah Elizabeth Griffin, brothers; Fred Lewis and Samuel Stephens, sister; Sarah Lois Griffin.
Billie Ray Kennedy
Services for Billie Ray Kennedy were held Monday, February 26, 2007 at 11 a.m. at Webb Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Level Hillman and Rev. Donnie Powell officiating. Burial was in Oakland Baptist Church Cemetery with James F. Webb Funeral Home of Newton in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Kennedy, 72, of Decatur died February 24, 2007 at Laird’s Hospital in Union.
Survivors include: wife; Betty Gressett Kennedy, Decatur, 4 daughters; Deborah Smith, Seminary, Ronda Kennedy, McGee, Karen Chiemprahba, Vicksburg, Tammie Fletcher, Philadelphia. five sons; Durlan Kennedy, Rolling Fork, Jason Griffin, Duffee, James Kennedy, Brandon, Randy Griffin, Decatur, Clint Kennedy, Decatur, four sisters; Mamie Lou Atkinson, Morton, Barbara Barefield, Mendenhall, Earnestine Huggins, Wyoming, Ershell Kennedy, McGee, 25 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by parents; William Earnest and Vera Smith Kennedy and one brother and one sister.
Mr. Kennedy was a retired carpenter and self-employed. He was born in Simpson County. His church membership was at Oakland Baptist Church.
Pallbearers were Darrell Kennedy, Randy Griffin, Jason Griffin, James Kennedy, Jonathan Fletcher and Clint Kennedy. Honorary pallbearers were Justson Kennedy and Josh Kennedy.
