Modena Gainey Thrash
Mrs. Modena Gainey Thrash, 77, died Monday, April 9, 2007 at Miss. Baptist Medical Center in Jackson. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 11 at Ott and Lee Funeral Home Chapel in Forest with burial in Ephesus Baptist Cemetery. Rev. Bobby Warren officiated.
Levoy Peyton Jones, Jr.
Services for Levoy Peyton Jones, Jr. were held Thursday, April 12, 2007, at 11 a.m. at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. Revs. Steve Pouncey and John West officiated. Burial was in Mt. Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery. James F. Webb Funeral Home of Newton was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Jones, age 81, of Newton, died April 8, 2007 at his residence.
Survivors include wife Irene Jones of Newton, one son, William Richard and his wife Diane Jones of Newton; one daughter, Sandra and her husband Thomas McNeil of Newton; one brother, William Ras and his wife Betty Jones of Newton; grandchildren, Carol and husband Shane Fulford, Daniel Shane Jay, Kimberly Irene and husband Scott Lindley, Rhonda Butler, Renee Graham, Valerie and husband Tony Manganello; 10 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Jones was preceded in death by parents Levoy Peyton and Mattie Maude Jay Jones and brother Bobby Jones.
He was a retiree of Chatham Enterprises, born in Jasper County, a Navy veteran of WWII and a deacon at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. He was also a member of VFW.
Pallbearers were Bill Boulton, Tim Thomas, Jeff Jones, William Lucy, Ricky Kilgore and Joe McGee. Honorary pallbearers were Jasper Jones and deacons of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church.
Kathryn Reeves
Walters
Services for Mrs. Kathryn Reeves Walters were held on Monday, April 16, 2007 at 10 a.m. at Barham Chapel in Newton, with the Rev. Tom Sorrell officiating. Burial will be in Decatur Cemetery with Barham Funeral Home in Newton in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Walters, 79, of Newton died Friday, April 13, 2007, at Woodland Court in Newton. She was retired as County Welfare Director.
Survivors include one son, Edwin Carlie, Jr. and Seane of Newton; one sister, Helen Webb Rose of Decatur; one brother, Larry Reeves and wife Barbara of Stone Mountain, Ga.; one granddaughter, Ashley Faulkner and Joe Brock Faulkner of Brandon; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by husband Edwin Carlie Walters, Sr.
She was a member of Newton United Methodist Church and a member of D.A.R.
Pallbearers: Steve Harbour, Joe Brock Faulkner, Andy Walker, Terri Boatright, Donald Walters, Ronald Walters. Honorary pallbearers: Tommy Coghlyn, Tony Grimes, Tim Sanford, Dr. Gil Davis, Doug Whittle.
The family requests memorials be made to The Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi.
Annabelle Holcomb
Turner
Memorial services for Mrs. Annabelle Holcomb Turner were held Wednesday, April 11, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Newton United Methodist Church with the Revs. Tom Sorrell and Michael Hollis officiating. Burial will be at a later date with Barham Funeral Home in Newton in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Turner, age 83, of Newton, died Tuesday, April 10, 2007, at Jeff Anderson Regional Hospital in Meridian.
Survivors include: husband Dewey J. Turner of Newton; 2 daughters, Susan Harris of Newton; Trudy and husband Jay Madrid of Dallas, Texas; 3 granddaughters, Kristen and husband Matthew Thorne of Newton; Jody and husband Grant Swartzwelder of Dallas, Texas; Mandy Madrid of New York City, New York; great-grandchild Abbey Swartzwelder.
Mrs. Turner was born in Gibsonburg, Ohio and grew up in Monroe, Mich. and has lived in Mississippi for the past 47 years. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She dearly loved her God and her family. She was a former Pink Lady at Newton Regional Hospital and taught Sunday school at Newton United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Pink Ladies of Newton Regional Hospital or Newton United Methodist Church.
George Wilbur Laird
Services for Mr. George Wilbur “Big Boy” Laird were held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 16, 2007 at Hebron Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Harold Laird and Rev. James McMillian officiated.
Mr. Laird, 84, died Friday, April 13, 2007, at Laird Hospital in Union.
Survivors include: Loving wife of 63 years Ina Laird of Little Rock; two daughters, Brenda and husband Bobby Bynum of Decatur, Rosann and husband Jerry Pinson of Little Rock; one son-in-law, Tony Tirante of Baton Rouge, La.; two brothers, Don Laird of Little Rock, James B. Laird of Little Rock; 10 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Charlotte Tirante, one son, Bobby Laird, one sister, Dorothy Leach and parents Grady and Lelia Laird.
Mr. Laird was an active member of Hebron Baptist Church, a Mason and also served in the Army during WWII.
Services for Mrs. Nellie Burns Williams were held Monday, April 16, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Hudson Chapel Church of God. Rev. Ed Dickerson and Rev. Warren Hedgepeth officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Williams, age 81, died April 14, 2007 at Hilltop Nursing Home in Union.
Survivors include: 4 daughters, Betty and husband Doyce Lucroy of Pontotoc, Virginia and husband Jody Loper of Decatur, Joyce and husband Billy Sparacino of Birmingham, Ala., Jackie and husband Dale Thompson of Union; 9 grandchildren, Steve Lucroy, Melissa Flint, Toni Collins, Jessica, Jamie and Joseph Sparacino, Kristi Adcock, Robby Thompson and Anita Dillard; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother, Larry French and wife Ann of Conehatta.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clell Williams, 2 brothers, Perry Lee and James Robert French and a great-grandson, Jonathan Troy Collins.
Pallbearers: Steve Lucroy, Phillip Dillard, Terrell Flint, Joseph Sparacino, Robby Thompson, Ronnie and Justin Adcock.
Bonnie Louise
Shelby Harris
Services for Bonnie Louise Shelby Harris were held Saturday, April 14, 2007 at James F. Webb Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. George Felton officiating. Burial was at Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery. James F. Webb Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Harris, 75, died April 11, 2007, at North Fulton Regional Hospital in Roswell, Ga. She will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
Survivors include husband Jesse Harris of Roswell, Ga.; son Mike Harris and wife Brenda of Suwanee, Ga.; daughter Mitzi and husband Robert Lau; grandchildren Jesse Michael Harris, II, Rachel Marie Harris, Robert Clayton Lau, II, Elizabeth Shelby Lau and Natalie Alford Lau; brothers Alton Shelby and wife Charlotte of Brandon, Charles Shelby and wife Bonava of Madison, a special friend and caregiver Annie Fuller, and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Odis Herman Shelby and Bonnie Bell Leigh Shelby.
Pallbearers were Blake Shelby, Markham Robinson, Donald Godwin, Jesse Harris, II, Clayton Lau and Chris Harris.
