NEWTON — James Clark Monroe, Jr.

Services for James Clark Monroe, Jr., 88, of Gilbert, La. were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 29, 2006, in the chapel of Mullen Funeral Home, Winnsboro, La., with Dr. Milton Williams officiating, assisted by the Rev. Don Blackmon.

Burial was in South Central Cemetery near Wisner, La., under the direction of Mullen Funeral Home of Winnsboro.

Monroe was born August 28, 1917, in Decatur. He was a graduate of Newton County High School, East Central Community College, Mississippi State University, and served in the U.S. Army from 1942 until 1946. He taught Vocational Agriculture at Gilbert High School in Gilbert, La. for 37 years and was FFA Advisor. He received the Distinguished Service Award in Agricultural Education and Honorary State Farmer Degree from Louisiana FFA. He was a Mason for more than 50 years and Past Master of Don Gilbert Lodge No. 405. Monroe was also a charter member of Barak Shriners, the Greater Units and Macon Ridge Shrine Club. He was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church of Gilbert, LA and a farmer.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Katie Donahoe Monroe, of Gilbert, La., a son Jim Monroe and wife Connie of Baton Rouge, La.; grandsons Chris Monroe and wife Lindsey, and Daryl Monroe and wife Natalie, great grandson, Ryan Ellis Monroe; one sister Neva Monroe Doler of Eupora, one brother Curtis Ryan Monroe, Fulton. He was preceded in death by his father and mother James C. Monroe, Sr. and Neva Roberts Monroe, four brothers William M. Monroe, Lewis Leon Monroe, Ellis Roberts Monroe and Johnny Ray Monroe.



Merle Wheeler James

Merle Wheeler James, 83, of Bay Springs died Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at Jasper General Nursing Home. Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 19 at Antioch Baptist Church with burial in Antioch Cemetery. Visitation was Thursday, May 18 at Colonial Chapel from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy C. James. She is survived by daughter, Marcia and Ron Warnock of Canton, GA; a son, Archie and Connie James of Marietta, GA. Five grandchildren: Chad and Brad Warnock of Canton, GA and Tyler, Ryan and Lyndsey James of Marietta, Ga.

Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Bay Springs was in charge of arrangements.
