NEWTON — Pauline Maslen Weir

NEWTON — Services for Pauline Maslen Weir were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Newton County Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joe E. Garvin officiating. Burial was in the Garlandsville Cemetery.

Mrs. Weir, 79, of Newton, died Thursday, June 14, 2007, in her home. She was a member of Garlandsville Methodist Church.

Survivors include her sons, Waddie “Skipper” Thomas Weir Jr. of Poinciana, Fla., Levie Charles Weir Sr. of Newton, Larkin Darral of Garlandsville, David Allen Weir of Kissimme, Fla.; brothers, Johnny Malsen of Eldorado Springs, Mo., Elton Don Maslen of Stockton, Mo., Forest Lee Maslen of Belle Chasse, La.; sisters, Irene Maslen Stephens of Eldorado Springs, Thelma Maslen Goddard of Tucson, Ariz., Geneva Ann Maslen Newton of Sweetwater, Texas; grandchildren, Charlie Weir of Jackson, Wanda Kay Weir Maddox of Laurel, Richard Thomas Weir of Little Rock, Mary Elecia Weir Elmore of Greenwood and Janie Lynn Weir of Santana, Kan. and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents Charles Elijah and Opal Virginia Plaine Maslen; her husband, Waddie Thomas Weir Sr.; brothers, James Lewis Maslen, George Rayston Maslen, Tommy Leroy Maslen and a sister, Novella Maslen.

Pallbearers were Earl Karr, George Maslen, Rick Jackson, Richard Weir, Charlie Weir and Lewis Foley.

Honorary pallbearers were Sam Boutwell, Donald Godwin, Chris Elmore and Robbie Cain.



Sara Heard

NEWTON — Arrangements were incomplete at Newton County Funeral Home for Sara Heard, 81, of Decatur, who died Monday, June 18, 2007, at Baxter Hospital in Mountain Home, Ark.



Margaret Hays Walker

UNION — Services for Margaret Hays Walker will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Union Methodist Church. Burial will be at Union Cemetery with Stephens Funeral Home in Union in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Walker, 91, died Saturday, June 16, 2007, at her home. She was surrounded by loving family and friends.

Margaret was born to George Frederick and Alma Pruitt Hays in Union on June 24, 1916. She graduated from Union High School in 1934 and met her future husband while at East Central Junior College the year after. She married Glenn David Walker, then an assistant coach at Mississippi College on June 7, 1941.

As the World War II mobilization began, she was devoted to her husband and began her career as a military wife. Like many military wives, she managed her household and cared for her children through numerous separations and many transfers. As the wife of the commander of Soldiers, she assisted many wives and families on posts all over the world, from China to Berlin to Camp Gordon, Ga. Margaret and Glenn returned home to Union upon their retirement from the Army in 1974, culminating in command of the First United States Army, and from their second retirement as Adjutant General of the State of Mississippi in 1979. Margaret was married for 61 years to Glenn, Lieutenant General, U.S. Army, who retired in 1974 after 34 years of service, and predeceased his wife on May 3, 2002.

Walker served her nation with distinction as an Army wife, volunteering with the Gray Ladies of the Red Cross and with the Army Community Service. She was a member of the 4th Infantry Division Association, and was active in many community activities, including United Methodist Women of both Union and Forest, and the Home and Garden Clubs of Union and Forest.

As the wife of a commander on overseas assignments, Margaret entertained foreign dignitaries, senior U.S. government officials, and military officers, all while training and supervising the Army staff assisting her. She visited women’s groups, schools and hospitals while traveling throughout the country. In performing these duties, she was a role model for young Army wives, mentored many, and befriended all.

Walker viewed her achievements modestly and was a consummate and gracious hostess. She was a thoughtful friend and avid gardener, and she tended to both with great care and devotion. She never forgot a face or name.

She is survived by her sons, LTC (U.S. Army, retired) Glenn David Walker Jr. and Kathy Chambliss of Jackson; Dr. Michael James Walker and Dr. Barbara Allen of Forest; and B.G. Keith C. Walker and Valerie Jane Walker of Oakton, Va. Grandchildren, Glenn David Walker III, Holt Joseph Walker, James Madison Walker, Kathleen Walker Thorne, Laura Margaret Walker, Brian Christopher Walker, Duncan Gregory Walker, Audrey Michelle Walker, and great-grandchildren, Reese Walker and Campbell Walker.



Evelyn Gibbs Freeman

Pearl - Evelyn Gibbs Freeman, 82, died Tuesday, June 12, 2007 at St. Dominic Memorial Hospital in Jackson. Visitation was held Wednesday, June 13 from 5 p.m.- 8 p.m. and Thursday, June 14 from 9 a.m.- 10 a.m. at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon. Funeral services were 10 a.m. Thursday June 14 at the funeral home with a 2 p.m. graveside service to follow at Pine Bluff Cemetery in Newton County. Rev. Steve Jackson, Mr. Ray Arnold and Mr. Ronnie Pickett officiated with the services. Pallbearers were Joe Freeman, Clyde Guyse, Ron Windham, Paul Edward Hill, Daniel Pickett and Alex Pickett.

Mrs. Freeman was a native of Newton County and has been a resident of Pearl for the past 48 years. She was a member of McLaurin Heights Baptist Church and the Ruth Sunday School Class. Mrs. Freeman retired from A&P Grocery and she was also a past member of the Eastern Star. Her hobbies included gardening and she loved growing Christmas cactus. Mrs. Freeman was a devoted and loving wife and mother who will always be remembered for her jolly laugh.

A special than you goes out to all the friends and neighbors who have been so kind to her through the years.

She is survived by her daughter, Patti Freeman of Peral; one sister, Lizzie Gibbs Holley of Fort Worth, Texas; two nieces, Janice Thorne Pickett and husband Ronnie of Hickory and Barbara Styles of Fort Worth, Texas; four nephews, Alex and Daniel PIckett of Hickory, Chris Styles of Fort Worth, Texas, and Joe Howard Freeman of Union. She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles O. Freeman; parents, Fred and Molly Gibbs; two sisters, Opal Easom and Gladys Thorne and one brother, Preston Gibbs.

Rosie Carol Allen

Carthage - Rosie Carol Allen, 56, a retired CNA, died Friday, June 15, 2007 at Hospice in His Hands.

Services were 12:00 Monday, June 18, 2007, at Wilcox Funeral Home in Carthage with Bro. Ricky Wilcher, Bro. Cregg Puckett and Bro. Tom Brooks officiating. Burial was at Leesburg Church of Christ cemetery.

Mrs. Allen was a native of Leake County. She was a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church.

Survivors include sons Sam Wright of Holden, LA and Timothy Allen of Edinburg; daughters Tammy Wright of Holden LA, Pamela Wilkerson of Florence, Dianne Kellum of Edinburg, and Cindy Denton of Morton; brothers Davis Sistrunk of Brandon and Doyle Sistrunk of Pelahatchie; sisters Ruth Caldwell of Carthage, Gracie Puckett of Brandon, and Loretta Garber of Brandon and nine grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Cory Harkins, William Sistrunk, Keith Sistrunk, Alex Wright, Richard Wright, Jonathon Puckett, John Allen, Eric Allen, Jo Jo Wright.

Honorary pallbearers were Allen Wilkerson, Charles Wilkerson, Timothy Allen, Jonathon Shumaker, Jessie Kellum and Jacob Kellum.
