Brenda F. Towner
Brenda F. Towner was born on Dec. 1, 1951 to the union of John Wiley and Zeola Norris of Raleigh, Miss. She received her high school education at Turner Chapel High School where she was salutatorian of her graduating class. She graduated from The University Southern Mississippi in Hattisburg, Miss., where she received a Bachelor of Science in Education. In 1974, she received her Master’s Degree in Special Education from William Carey College.
Brenda started teaching at the age of 21 and taught up until she became ill in 2001. She had taught for 28 years.
Brenda accepted Christ at an early age and was a faithful member of Mt. Nebo M.B. Church where she was received as a secretary and was a n the Program Committee. She was also the lead singer of the Mt. Nebo Gospel Singers for 12 years.
Brenda was united in a holy matrimony to Albert Towner on December 16, 2000.
Brenda, (“Bren” or “Faye” as known to many) will always be remembered in our hearts and minds for her kindness, her creativity, intellectual abilities and love for many people. Brenda touched the lives of many people and will be missed.
Brenda was called home May 22, 2006 at 7:28 a.m.
She leaves to cherish her memory: a husband, Albert Towner, parents, J.W. and Zeola Norris, two children, Cory Bender and Jessica Ducksworth of Raleigh, Miss.; one Goddaughter: Junita Gammage: seven sisters, Betye Willis of Union, Miss., Sybil Patton of Gulfport, Miss., Martha Warner of Jackson, Miss., Mary Ushi of Greenwood, Miss., Charlotte McDonald of Heidelberg, Miss. One brother, James Norris of Raleigh, Miss., and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her oldest brother Aaron Percy Norris.
She was a faithful member of Women on the Move for Christ and Jasper County Adult Club.
Katharine Norman Dunagin Steele
Katharine Dunagin Steele passed away on June 14, 2006, in McAlester, Okla. Visitation was at Guardian Funeral Home form 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 17th, and funeral services were in the Louise Prichard chapel of First Baptist Church, Oklahoma City, on Sunday June 18th at 2 p.m. Grave side services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 20th at the Decatur Cemetery in Decatur, Miss.
Mrs. Steele was born in Newton, Miss., on September 10, 1920, to Willis and Virginia Norman. She graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi, from which she later received her master’s degree in education. In 1942 she married Dr. James L. Dunagin, with whom she enjoyed only 23 years of marriage before his untimely death in 1965. The cheerful and energetic mother of four children, she instilled in them love for music and reading. In 1973 she married art professor Karl Steele of Wheaton, Ill., with whom she spent eight happy years until his death in 1982.
An enthusiastic and caring school teacher, Mrs. Steele derived great joy from her twenty plus years of teaching in Forest and Hattisburg, Miss.; New Orleans; Oklahoma City; and Enid, Okla. Her hobbies of singing, playing the piano and organ, and oil painting also gave her much enjoyment. For almost forty years she was a faithful member of First Baptist Church, OKC, where she used her musical talents, taught Sunday school class, and worked in the Good Shepherd Ministry.
Mrs. Steele was preceded in death by her first husband Dr. James L. Dunagin, her second husband Karl Steele, her father Willis J. Norman, her mother Virginia Brantley Norman, and a sister, Sybil Mandle. She is survived by her daughter, Jan Pitts, and her husband Bill of Centerville, Ga., and their children Susanne and Dr. Brian Pitts; her son Dr. James L. Dunagin Jr. and his wife Emily of McAlester, Okla., and their daughters Amy and Jane; her son Norman Dunagin and his wife Ann of Oklahoma City and their daughter Sarah; her son David Dunagin and his wife Geraldine of Shawnee, Okla., and their daughter LaDeana; and her step- daughter Carolyn Streeter of Muskegon, Mich., and her family. Additionally, she is survived by a sister, Maragret Royal, and her husband Lyle of Virden, Ill.; a brother, Marion Norman, and his wife Dorothy of Hemphill, TX; as well as by several nieces, nephews and numerous cousins.
Dot McKinion
Funeral services for Dot McKinion, 55, were held Friday, June 16, 2006 at 10 a.m. from the chapel of McClain- Hays Funeral Home. The Revs. Steve Robinson, James Galloway, and Wayne Griffith officiated. Burial was is Beatline Cemetery. Mrs. McKinion dies Wednesday, June 14, 2006 at Newton Regional Hospital. She was a native of Nesoba County and had been a resident of Newton for the past several years. She was a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Newton. Mrs. McKinion was preceded in death by her husband, Terry McKinion, Sr. in 2003. Survivors include one daughter, Theresa McKinion of Newton; two sons, Terry McKinion, Jr. and his wife , Paige of Newton, and Justin McKinion and his wife, Jada of Newton; two grandsons, Dylan McKinion of Newton, and Ty McKinion of Newton; two sisters, Paula Jones of Mobile, Ala., and Susan Stevenson of Decatur; one brother Greg McLaurin of Dekalb; one niece and one nephew. Pallbearers were: David Carr, James Harold Johnson, Barry Hollingsworth, Stephan Sykes, John Todd and Brent Mayes.
Annie Ruth Hollingsworth Valentine
Services for Annie Ruth Hollingsworth Valentine were held Saturday June 17 at 2:30 p.m. at Webb Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation hours were Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Webb F.H. and at 8 a.m. Saturday until service time with Rev’s Lavell Hillman and Steve Robinson officiating.
Burial was in Pine Bluff Baptist Church Cemetery with James F. Webb Funeral Home of Newton in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Valentine, 79, of Lawrence died June 16. Survivors include to sons; Ted and his wife Betty Valentine of Lawrence and Tony and his wife Nancy Valentine of Lawrence; one daughter Senita and her husband DOn Wilhelm of Lawrence; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James C. Valentine and her parents, James H. and Eva Gressett Hollingsworth.
Mrs. Valentine was retired from upholster for Lay-Z-Boy Chair Co. She attended Pine Bluff Baptist Church.
Pallbearers were Rud Hollingsworth, Dale hollingsworth, Doug Hollingsworth, Lin Ezelle, Kent Mayes, Hansel Willis and Larry Loper.
Junior McKinion
Funeral services for Junior McKinion, 77, will be held Wednesday, June 21 at 11 a.m. from the chapel of McClain-Hays Funeral Home. Rev. Buddy Covington will officiate. Burial will be in Beatline Cemetery. Mr. McKinion died Sunday, June 18, at Regency Hospital of Meridian. He was a native and lifelong resident of Neshoba County. He was retired from Wells-Lamont after 45 years of service. He loved to hunt, fish and spend time tending to his dogs and garden. He devoted his life to his family - wife, children and grandchildren. He was a member of Beatline Baptist Church in Neshoba County. Mr. McKinion was preceded in death by one son, Terry McKinion, Sr., in 2003. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Hazel McKinion of Philadelphia, one daughter, Wanda Matthews of Philadelphia, 2 sons, Danny McKinion, Sr. and Ricky McKinion, Sr., both of Philadelphia, 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, 2 brothers, Ross McKinion and Jerrel McKinion, both of Philadelphia, and a host of nieces and nephews. Pallbearers are Ray Addy, Keith McCrory, Danny (Dink) McKinion, Jr., Ronnie Lofton, Kendall Ward, Ronnie Ward, Hubert Higginbotham, Jesse Willingham and Carl McLemore.
