NEWTON Glen Walley

HIGH POINT, N.C. – A memorial service for Glen Blakely Walley was held at First United Methodist Church, 512 N. Main Street, High Point, NC on Saturday, July 29, 2006 at 2 p.m. Arrangements by Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point.

Walley, 83, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, July 27, 2006 after a long illness.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mildred Glisson Walley; two sons, Randall Perry Walley and wife Carolyn of High Point, and Dale Blakely Walley and wife Jan of Wake Forest; and a daughter, Glenda Walley of Ashburn, Va. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Family members had a time of visitation immediately following the service.

Walley was born in Crosby, Miss. on December 22, 1922 the son of Perry and Edna Mills Walley. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert Walley of Jackson, Miss.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corp in January, 1941 and served in the 303rd Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force in England. After flying 24 missions over Europe, the war in the European Theatre came to an end on the day he was to fly his 25th mission. Like many of his generation, the war was a major defining moment that greatly influenced the remainder of his life.

After the war, he entered Mississippi State College where he earned a degree in Engineering and then began a 38 year management and consulting career in the apparel industry. During his life he was active in local church, community and civic activities.

Upon retirement, the Walleys moved to High Point to be near children and grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that any memorial gifts be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Dr., High Point, NC 27262. Online condolences can be made through www.cumbyfuneral.com.
