NEWTON —
William ‘Pat’ Pugh
Services for William “Pat” Pugh were held Sat. Sept. 2 at 10 a.m. at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church with Rev. Thomas Laird and David Nelson officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery with James F. Webb Funeral Home of Newton in charge of arrangements.
Pugh, 65, of Hickory, died Aug. 30 at Heartfelt Hospice in Meridian.
Survivors include his wife, Vida Huff Pugh; two daughters: Diana and her husband Wendell Horton of Houston, Texas ; Rene Pugh of Chama, N.M.; a son, Steve and his wife Cheryl Pugh of Hickory; a brother, Bobby and his wife Annette Pugh of Hickory; five grandchildren: Adam Horton of Dallas, Texas; Hank Pugh of Hickory; Katie Horton of Houston, Texas; Kevin Horton of Houston, Texas and Kyle Pugh of Hickory.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Willie Clinton and Rosie Gibbon Pugh; and two infant brothers.
He was a retired maintenance worker for La-Z-Boy Chair Co. and was a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge #343 in Hickory.
Pall Bearers were Larry Crader, James Otis Swearingen, Andy McMillan, Phil Harris, Andy Robinson and Mahlon Smith Jr.
Honorary pall bearers were Richard Harris, Arleigh Allen, Raymond McMillan, Bobby Caldwell, Charles Robert Everett, Roy Everett and Curtis Pugh.
Dan M. Harrison
Services for Dan M. Harrison were held Monday, Sept. 4 at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Meridian, with the Revs. Raymon Leake and Frank Harmon officiating. Burial was in the Ephesus Baptist Church Cemetery. Barham Funeral Home of Meridian was in charge of arrangements.
Harrison, 48, of Meridian, died Friday, September 1, 2006 in Oxford.
Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Frankie; sons Daniel, Denver and Davis, all of Meridian; his mother, Joyce Harrison, of Forest; brothers Charles Harrison and his wife Sherrod of Pontotoc, and Tommy Harrison and his wife Wanda of Forest; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family, including very special cousins John Harrison of Newton and Phil Harrison of Louisville.
He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Maurice Harrison, and his brother, Bill Harrison.
A devoted father and husband, he was involved in every aspect of his sons’ lives. He will always be remembered for his great sense of humor and his avid support of the Ole Miss Rebels.
Harrison held associate degrees in both science and nursing, a bachelor of business administration degree from the University of Mississippi, and a master’s in business administration from Mississippi College.
Harrison was executive vice president of Rush Health Systems. He had 25 years of service with Rush in a succession of positions, including senior vice president and administrator of Rush Foundation Hospital. He was on the American Hospital Association Board of Trustees, and served as chairman of the AHA Regional Policy Board. Harrison was also very involved with the Mississippi Hospital Association, where he served on the Board of Governors and was MHA past president. Harrison was a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives, Health Providers Inc. Board of directors and East Central Hospital Council.
He was dedicated to this community through his involvement with the State Games of Mississippi, where he served on the board of directors. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Meridian. While living in Newton, he was a deacon, Sunday school teacher and choir member at the First Baptist Church of Newton. Harrison was also a member of the Board of Directors of Newton Public Library, East Central Community College Alumni Board, Newton Rotary Club, Meridian Community College Alumni Board, Newton Heart Fund and the United Givers Fund of Newton. He also served as past president of Newton Country Club, Newton Chamber of Commerce and Newton County Ducks Unlimited.
In 1987, Harrison was named one of 12 Alumni of the Year for Meridian Community College and Newton County’s Man of the Year. He also received the Distinguished Service Award, Who’s Who in Mississippi in 1990.
Pallbearers were John Harrison, Phil Harrison, Bill May, Richard Smith, Sam Cameron and Harry Mayer.
In lieu of flowers, the family requested memorials be made to the American Heart Association or the charity of your choice.
James ‘Jim’ Lee Sowell
A remembrance service for James Jim Lee Sowell was held Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006 at 5:30 p.m. at James F. Webb Funeral Home in Newton, with the Rev. Luke Lane officiating. James F. Webb Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Sowell, 53, of Newton, died Saturday, September 2, 2006, at Guardian Angel Hospice, Inc. in Marion.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly Addy Sowell, of Newton; his daughter, Felicia Sowell, of Newton; his son, Marshall Alan Sowell, of Memphis, Tenn.; his parents, the Rev. Grady and Carolyn Moore Sowell, of Olive Branch; his sister, Virginia Lynn Logue, of Phoenix, Ariz.; and several cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Grady Alan Sowell.
Sowell, born in Memphis, Tenn., was a retired carpenter who had worked for Harrison’s Construction. He was a Vietnam veteran who had served with the U.S. Marine Corps, and was also known as a musician. He belonged to the First Baptist Church of Newton.
Virgil J. Pennington
Services for Virgil J. Pennington were held Tuesday, Aug. 29 at Ott & Lee Funeral Home Chapel in Forest with the Rev. Billy Emmons and Rev. Larry Lair officiating. Burial was in Pine Ridge Baptist Cemetery with Ott &* Lee in charge.
Pennington, 81, died Sunday, Aug. 27 at his residence in Lake.
He was a resident of Lawrence.
