NEWTON

Hodgen Parke Montague

Hodgen Parke Montague, 101, died on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2007 at Woodland Court Personal Care Home in Newton.

A grave side service was held at the Newton County Memorial Gardens Cemetery on Friday Nov. 2. Dr. Tom Sikes, pastor of First Christian Church in Meridian where Mr. Montague was a member, officiated.

Mr. Montague was a native of St. Louis, Mo., and was educated at Sol Dan High School and the University of Missouri. He moved his family to Clinton in 1939 and lived there until a move to Jackson 10 years later. He was manager of the fixture plant for Jitney Jungle stores and ultimately was named a vice president of Jitney Jungle, Inc. He was a member of First Christian Church in Jackson for 60 years and served as Chairman of the building committee for the church facility on North State at High Street.

In later years, Montague and his wife moved to Newton to be near their daughter and her family. He continued to work until the age of 80 years; in Newton for Tatum Concrete Company as a general contractor.

His quest for knowledge never ended. He was an avid reader and accumulated a vast library of books on many subjects. He was always eager to learn more. He was especially interested in history and genealogy.

He was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 73 years, Nelle, and one son, Hodgen Jr., who was lost at sea in 1955 off the coast of Japan.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Betty and James Walter Chapman of Newton; three grandchildren, Kent M. Culverhouse of Roswell, Ga., Lynne C. Kenna of Forest, Clay Chapman of Newton and four great-grandchildren, Drew and Ben Kenna, Haley and Kelly Chapman.

The family would like to express special appreciation to Mrs. Jimmie Nell Rawson, Mrs. Shirley Jones and the entire staff at Woodland Care Personal Care Home for their loving attention and care for their loved one these past two years.

Memorials may be made to First Christian Church, 1301 23rd Ave., Meridian, MS 39301
