Annabel Jackie McGee
Annabel Jackie McGee Hand of Lake and Jackson passed away on Friday Nov. 30 in College Station, TX. All four of her children were at her side when she passed. She was born on August 8, 1924 in Lake to Alvin McGee and Louise Pennington. She was graduated from Lake High School where she was Valedictorian of her class in 1941. She had a beautiful handwriting script that many people commented on during her lifetime.
She met and later married Bob Hand of Lawrence and the two opened one the first professional photography studios, Hand Studios, in Jackson in 1946 after World War II. For the next 22 years they photographed many individuals, families, and weddings throughout the state of Mississippi. Later she opened La Vance Studio on Lakeland Drive in Jackson where she specialized in children and animal photography.
Jackie was also a member of the Mississippi Civil Air Patrol,U.S.A.F. auxiliary, where she served as the Public Affairs Officer in the mid 1960s. She disseminated information on lost aircraft and pilots to news agencies and compiled a history of the activates of Mississippi Wing Civil Air Patrol.
She is survived by her four children; Bobbie Slater of Clinton, LA, Steve Hand of College Station,TX, Suja Pritchard of San Diego, CA, Robert Hand of New Orleans, LA, and her sister Yvonne McGee Montgomery of Black Mountain, NC, as well as her grandchildren Donna Hammons, Denise Wynn, Roger Slater Jr, Ben Slater, Stephen Hand(USMC), Brian Hand, Mija Pritchard, Nathaniel Hand, as well as six great-grand children.
A memorial celebration will be in the spring of 2008 at her birthplace in Lake, Mississippi.
Sarah B. Vance
Services for Sarah B. Vance were held Saturday, December 22, 2007 at 10 a.m. at James F. Webb Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Sephus Garrett officiating. Burial was in Conehatta Methodist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Vance, 85, of Meridian, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2007, at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center. She was a member of Christian Fellowship Independent Methodist Church. Survivors include her sons, Keith Vance and his wife, Carol, of Starkville and Scott Vance and his wife, Pam, of the Martin Community; grandchildren, Chris Vance and Jennie Vance. She was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Vance; her parents, John and Mattie Blackburn; five brothers and four sisters.
Pallbearers were Ronnie Blackburn, Tim Pigford, Rodney Wing, Tyler Anderson, Danny McDonald and Brad McDonald. Honorary pallbearers were Lester Thompson.
