Lake girls pick up pair of wins

The Newton Record

Lake While it wasn’t necessarily auspicious, Lake’s girls didn’t turn any heads with their first-half effort last Tuesday night at home against Raleigh.

But in the second half ...

“We finally woke up and played a little ball,” Lake coach Victor Gilstrap said of the Lady Hornets, who erupted for 49 second-half points on their way to a 73-63 win over the Class 3A Lady Lions.

Lake’s girls carried that momentum into Friday’s contest, where they shut down Scott Central 44-30 to improve to 12-10 on the season.

The Lake boys, meanwhile, dropped 78-58 and 61-35 decisions to Raleigh and Scott Central to fall to 1-19. The Hornets have lost 15 straight contests.

Lake has three district games on tap this week, as both squads were to host Sebastopol Tuesday. Friday, they’ll visit Puckett, and Saturday, Lake goes to Pisgah. Next Tuesday, the Hornets and Lady Hornets will visit the Mississippi School for the Deaf in Jackson.

Lake girls 73, Raleigh 63

The Lady Hornets were down 29-24 at halftime, but outscored the Lady Lions 25-19 in the third quarter to take a one-point lead; then finished the game with a big run to put Raleigh away.

Marrieyanna Thames led four Lake girls in double figures with 21 points, while Yolanda Jones scored 14. Courtney Norris scored 13 points, Brittney Miles scored 10 and Barbara Odom chipped in eight.

Nikita Mitchell led Raleigh with 20 points.

Raleigh 78, Lake boys 58

Eric Carter scored a game-high 26 points, but it wasn’t enough to help the Hornets against the Class 3A Lions last Tuesday.

Lake trailed 39-32 at halftime, was down by 10 going into the fourth quarter and gave up 27 points to Raleigh over the final 8 minutes.

Carter had 26 points and Desmond Morales 10 for Lake. Maurice Pinkston tallied eight points and Marcus Ricks had six.

Carnelius Denson (25), Henry Washington (19) and Justin Burks (18) combined for 62 points to lead Raleigh.

Lake girls 44, Scott Central 30

The Lady Hornets outscored Scott Central in each of the first three quarters of last Friday night’s win at home.

Lake led 19-13 at halftime, then opened the second half with a 14-5 spurt to bust the game open.

Norris led the way with 16 points, while Thames scored 14. Keosha Amos chipped in seven points.

Scott Central 61, Lake boys 35

The homestanding Hornets managed just four points in the first quarter and were down 31-14 at halftime to the neighboring Rebels from Scott County.

Kenneth Barlow led Scott Central with a game-high 17 points.
