Newton County wins 3A state championship

  • Johnson takes over NHS football
    The Newton Tigers finally have a new football coach. After months of searching, Newton hired James Johnson to be the school’s next football coach. He replaces Tim Moore who stepped down after three seasons with the Tigers.

  • Lady Cougars one win away
    Just one more win. That’s the predicament the Newton County Lady Cougars faced going into Tuesday’s Game 2 of the Class 3A fastpitch state championship series. The Lady Cougars held a 1-0 series advantage and would have to lose twice on their own field to not come away with a fifth state title after beating the Lady Tigers 9-3 Saturday at Nettleton.

  • Newton’s Brown shoots for shotput gold in 2A
    Newton’s Natalya Brown is trying to put her name with some of the legendary names of Newton past such as Bender and Moncrief.

  • ECCC softball team vying for state title
    East Central Community College’s fast-pitch softball team wrapped up another successful regular season with a doubleheader sweep of Northeast Mississippi Community College Monday afternoon on the Decatur campus.

  • NCA teams finish up regular seasons
    The Newton County Academy Generals closed out their 2008 baseball season with an 11-1 whipping of Russell Christian Academy in Decatur on April 15.

  • Warriors split with Co-Lin, key division games ahead
    It was “Sophomore Recognition Day” Saturday for the defending state champion East Central Community College Diamond Warriors who took a break from MACJC Central Division competition to take on South Division member Copiah-Lincoln Community College at the Clark/Gay Baseball Complex on the Decatur campus.

  • St. Andrews eliminates Union from Class 2A playoffs
    The Union Yellowjackets made a quick exit from the Class 2A baseball playoffs, losing 11-8 and 16-5 to St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in their best-of-three series.

  • Lady Cougars punish Purvis in series sweep
    The Newton County Lady Cougars continued their playoff run with a sweep of Purvis in second-round action last week.

  • Lady Jackets fall in two to Clarkdale in classic series
    Sometimes one’s best just simply isn’t good enough and that was pretty much the fate dealt the Union Lady Jackets in last week’s Class 2A playoff series with Clarkdale.

  • Lake warms up at plate in series sweep
    Lake baseball coach Brian Goodman doesn’t know why his team exploded for 41 hits in their last three games. Maybe it was him fussing about it all the time or perhaps it was just the playoffs.

  • County sweeps Collins in 3A opener
    Newton County breezed past Collins in the opening round of the Class 3A baseball playoffs, sweeping the Tigers 11-1 and 17-2 Saturday in Decatur.

  • NCHS Lady Cougars hold division title
    The Newton County Lady Cougars had busy week on the softball diamond last week as they played five games, winning three.
    The wins came over Carthage (13-3), Clarkdale (6-4), and Union (8-5), while the losses were to Southeast Lauderdale (2-1) and Northwest Rankin (10-6).

  • Academy's losses double wins
    The Newton County Academy Lady Generals came away with a split in their first two slowpitch softball games of 2008.
    NCA opened with a 9-6 loss to Heidelberg Academy, then bounced back to thrash Grace Christian School 18-4.
    NCA hosted Grace on Monday and will go to Russell Christian Academy on Thursday in this week’s action. Tuesday’s game with Alpha Christian School was cancelled.

  • Union Lady Jackets take 3 out of 4
    The Union Lady Jackets were on the verge of recording their biggest week of the 2008 fastpitch season before letting the big one get away.
    The Lady Jackets defeated Philadelphia (15-0), Morton (20-9), and Southeast Lauderdale (5-3) before closing out the week with an 8-5 loss at Newton County. Union led the Lady Cougars 5-0.
