NCHS Lady Cougars hold division title

Marty Stamper/Staff Reporter
The Newton Record

NEWTON The Newton County Lady Cougars had busy week on the softball diamond last week as they played five games, winning three.

The wins came over Carthage (13-3), Clarkdale (6-4), and Union (8-5), while the losses were to Southeast Lauderdale (2-1) and Northwest Rankin (10-6).

Newton County entered the week with a 13-6 overall record and a 3-1 mark in Division 5-3A.

The Lady Cougars also had a scare when Chelsea Pugh was hit in the head with a batted ball during practice last week.

“Chelsea goes to the doctor today,” Newton County coach Justin Chaney said Monday. “She should be cleared to play, hopefully. She has been throwing on the side. She should be ready by the end of the week.”

In Pugh’s absence, Emily Davis filled in both at second base and in the circle.

“Emily Davis is one who was given an opportunity and has made the most of it,” Chaney said. “I am very proud for her.”

This week, the Lady Cougars were scheduled to go to Choctaw Central on Monday and to Morton on Tuesday, then host Neshoba Central on Friday and West Lauderdale on Saturday. Morton comes to Decatur on April 7.
