NEWTON The Newton County Academy Generals scored two touchdowns in both the first and third quarters in knocking off Hebron Christian School 39-14 in their home opener Friday night at Decatur.

“We looked real good,” said NCA assistant coach Chase Nicholson. “We were pretty solid all around. The defensive game plan worked good and we got after their quarterback and running backs real good. Our offense executed everything well.

“Hunter (Smith) had two touchdowns called back on penalties or he would have had a real big night. He was running like a mad man. Pretty much, we all did real good.”

The Generals took a 20-0 lead into halftime as they improved to 2-0. NCA’s first score came on a 55-yard pass from Rob Roberts to Anthony Williams in the first quarter. Jackson Therrian added the extra point for a 7-0 lead. Smith made it 13-0 when he scored on a 1-yard run. The extra point attempt was no good.

Smith scored again on a 10-yard run in the second quarter with Therrian’s kick giving the Generals a 20-0 advantage going into the break.

NCA added two more touchdowns in the third quarter to take a 33-6 lead.

Ethan Lewis scored for the Generals on an 11-yard run. The PAT failed. Roberts connected with Therrian on a 57-yard touchdown pass later in the third period. Therrian then added the extra point.

Hebron got on the scoreboard on a 13-yard touchdown toss from JoJo Pearson. The extra point was no good.

Both teams scored one touchdown in the fourth quarter. Lewis tallied for the Generals from a yard out. The PAT was no good.

Hebron got a 3-yard touchdown run with Pearson adding a two-point conversion.

Smith had 85 yards on seven carries for NCA. Lewis added 64 yards on nine rushes. Roberts completed 3-of-10 passes for 137 yards. Williams was the leading receiver with 75 yards on two receptions.

Hebron fell to 0-2 with the loss.

This Friday, the Generals host University Christian School, 0-2. The Flames lost 35-0 to East Rankin Academy last week after falling 26-19 to Sylva-Bay Academy in their season opener.

“We’re hoping to start off 3-0,” Nicholson said.
