NCA teams sweep pair on road from Winston Academy

NEWTON

Newton County Academy swept Winston Academy in a pair of basketball games Thursday at Louisville.

The Lady Generals improved to 5-1 with a 63-47 win, while the NCA boys won their season opener 59-50.

In this week’s action, NCA was scheduled to play at Sylva-Bay Academy on Tuesday before hosting Russell Christian Academy on Thursday and Lamar Christian of Purvis on Friday.

Both the Generals and Lady Generals play at Leake Academy on Monday, Nov. 24.



NCA girls 63, Winston 47

Lauren Shimfessel scored 18 points to lead the Lady Generals past the Lady Patriots.

NCA led 11-8 after one quarter, 24-22 at halftime, and 39-33 through three periods. The Lady Generals outscored Winston 24-14 over the final eight minutes.

In improving to 5-1, NCA also got 12 points each from Ashton Vance and Hanah Parker, nine from Leanne Killen, eight from Anna-Rose Blaylock, and four from Brittany Brown.

Barbara McMillin led Winston with a game-high 23 points. Rachael Peeples scored seven with Samantha Perkins and Maggie Watson both adding six.

The Generals jumped out to a 22-17 first-quarter lead behind 13 points from Dillon Williams as they won their season opener.

Jay Shotts kept Winston in the game with 11 points in the opening period.

Winston closed to within 28-27 by halftime, but the Generals extended their lead to 44-40 by the end of the third quarter.

Williams, a 5-foot-10 freshman, led the Generals with 25 points. He made four 3-point baskets.

NCA also got 19 points from Jackson Therrien, nine from Andrew Hanna, and six from Ryan Morrison.
