The Triple L Club of Clarke Venable Baptist Church will meet Tuesday, Feb. 13 at 11:30 for a pot luck lunch with the program starting about 12 noon. Guest speaker will be Arlis Nichols of Enterprise. Nichols is a Christian Humorist and author with a ministry to Senior Adults. He has produced several comedy albums. His book entitled, “My Brother Was an Only Child”, and tapes will be on display. Everyone is invited to attend.
Newton County’s Junior Miss scholarship program will be held Saturday, March 3 at 7 p.m. The event will be held at the Vickers Fine Arts Auditorium on the campus of East Central Community College in Decatur. The categories in which each contestant is evaluated are scholastics (20%), interview (25%), talent (25%), fitness (15%), and self-expression (15%). The program’s goal is to honor young women who excel in all these areas and to encourage them to continue on the path of excellence by completing their college education and assuming roles of leadership in their communities and professions. The national sponsors of America’s Junior Miss include the Mitchell Company, the City of Mobile, and Mobile County. National Category sponsors include Alabama Power, Wintzell’s Oyster House, AJM Council, Encore Rehabilitation, Inc., Mobile Gas and Regions Bank. Power Wheelchairs Available – The senior wheels U.S.A. Program makes available Power Wheelchairs to Senior citizens and the permanently disabled at no cost to the recipient, if they qualify. The Power wheelchairs are provided to those who can no longer walk nor self-propel a manual wheelchair, and who meet the additional guidelines of he program. No deposit is required. The fourth round of the series of eight management training seminars will be held every Thursday through March 8 at the MSU Meridian campus, Kahlmus Auditorium. The local chapter of the Newton County Picnic meetings will be held the first Saturday of each month at 2 p.m. in the Senior Citizens Building in Newton. We are in need of members. The East Central Mississippi Health Network will sponsor a Freedom from Smoking clinic in Newton at the La-Z Boy plant on Tuesday, Feb. 6. Anyone ages 4-12 interested in participating in baseball, softball or t-ball should register at City Hall in Newton. The registration fee is $20. The registration fee does not include a uniform. The registration deadline is Feb. 23. A $10 late fee will be assessed for those registering after the deadline. The late fee does not include t-ball. For more information, call 683-2870.
Newton County Elementary School will sponsor the Little Beauty and Beau pageant Saturday, Feb. 10 at 3 p.m. in Huff Auditorium at ECCC, 275 Broad St., Decatur. Kindergarten through 5th grade will be participating. Tickets will be $5 at the door.
Registration is now open for the Ten Star All Star summer basketball camp. The Ten Star All Star summer basketball camp is by invitation only. Boys and girls age 10-19 are eligible to apply. Past participants include: Michael Jordan, Tim Duncan, Vince Carter, Jerry Stackhouse, Grant Hill and Antawn Jamison. Players from 50 states and 17 foreign countries attended the 2006 camp. College basketball scholarships are possible for players selected to the All-American team.
