Blood Drive
• We need more Heroes. There will be a blood drive at Central MS Residential Center on Tuesday, June 17, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the staff development rooms. To sign up contact Erin Ferguson. Please bring your photo ID and donor card. Free cholesterol testing every time you donate! United Blood Service will be in charge.
Photos Needed
• A group of people looking for “old photographs” of Lawrence to hang in the old school house. They want any old photos of Lawrence .... depot ... old buildings ... school house etc. They will have the photos scanned so the originals can stay with the owner. Then they will be printed and hung in the old schoolhouse. The contact person is Patty Byrne at 601-683-3734.
Club Meetings
• Lawrence Community Club meets the first Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Come and enjoy good food, timely information and fellowship. Bring your family.
• Conehatta Community Club invites each of you to join us each month on the third Thursday at 6 p.m. for fellowship, food, fun and always timely information. Bring a friend.
• Liberty Community Club meets the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. in the club house on Liberty Church Road. There is always good food and excellent fellowship as well as an informative program each month. The public is invited to come join us.
• Newton County Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors meets the second Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. at East Central Community College in the Executive Conference Room.
4-H News
• If you are age 14-18 and interested in becoming a 4-H teen leader to help teach the Health Rocks curriculum, please call the 4-H office at 601-635-2268. We will teach the curriculum from July through November during various club meetings, retreats and day camps.
• Enter the 4-H Dairy Poster Contest. Every 4-H member may take part in the 4-H Dairy Month Poster Contest. Past first place state winners cannot compete again in the same division but can compete in a different age group as they become eligible. The contest runs through June. Posters will be judged by a group of judges in your county. Three county winners will be selected (one for each age group). You participate in your own community. Using the theme “Vote Dairy” make a poster, telling a story of milk and/or milk products. The poster must be 22 inches x 28 inches. You may use 22 inch x 28 inch poster board or a substitute. Get ideas from magazines, parents, friends, and others. Get pictures or materials from your dairy plant, dairy council unit, or milk cooperatives. Do not use brand names on your poster. Display your poster in a prominent location in your hometown during May or June. Put your name, address, age, and county on the back of your poster in the upper-right corner. Notify your Extension agent where your poster is displayed.
Library News
• Summer Reading Program at J. Elliot McMullan Public Library in Newton. The program will be held on Monday, through June 23, 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for all children entering first grade through second grade and through June 25, 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for all children entering third grade through fourth grade. June 30 is incentive awards day and on July 2 there will be an insect art exhibit from the Mississippi Museum of Science.
Donations
• An account has been set up at the Citizen’s Bank in Decatur for Billy Ray Walters. Mr. Walters is a cancer patient and does not have insurance. Anyone interested in making a donation may contact Citizen’s Bank at (601) 635-2321.
• An account has been opened for Michael Hammond at Great Southern National Bank, 15122 Miss. 15 S in Decatur. Mike is a cancer patient, who is unable to work and does not have insurance coverage. Donations may be made at any Great Southern National Bank branch.
• An account has been set up Citizens Bank in Decatur for William Lawson. William has been diagnosed with liver and lung cancer. He has a broken back and is living in a tent. He is asking for prayers and donations. For more info call (601) 562-4930 or (318) 746-0449.
Family Reunions
• The 81st annual Wroten-Crawford Reunion will be held on Sunday, July 6 at the Decatur Country Club on Miss. 503 in Decatur. Tom Scarborough will make a talk about his family and relations to the Wrotens, Crawfords and others. We will begin after local church services. • The 17th annual Owen T. Evans reunion will be held Saturday, June 21, at ClarkCo State Park, near Quitman. We will gather in the air-conditioned building for a day of food, fun and fellowship. This is an annual Evans/Burt reunion. Other surnames are Avant and Baskin. All paper products will be furnished. You’re asked to bring a covered dish and something to give for a door prize. • The Cullum Annual Reunion will be held on Saturday, July 19, at the Masonic Lodge in Little Rock. Friends and family are welcome. Bring your favorite covered dish and visit. If you have any questions, please contact Mary Cullum at 601-635-3141.
• Descendants of Anna Hill and Alonzo Calvin Meaders will gather for the Annual Reunion on July 19 in the Hickory Chamber of Commerce Building (former high school cafeteria) next to gymnasium. Time to meet is 10 a.m., a catered lunch will be served at 12 noon. Visitation follows. Bring family pictures and cameras. The theme is Together Again.
Contests
• A $1,000 grand prize is being offered in a religious poetry contest sponsored by the New Jersey Rainbow Poets. There are 50 prizes in all totaling almost $5,000. The deadline for entering is June 14. To enter, send one poem of 21 lines or less to Free Poetry Contest 103 North Wood Avenue #32 Linden, NJ 07036. Or enter on-line www.rainbowpoets.com. Be sure your name and address appears on the page with your poem. If you wish a winner’s list please enclose a stamped return envelope.
FSA Deadlines
• Farm Service Agency reminds producers that they have until July 18, to enroll in the 2005-2007 Livestock Compensation Program (LCP) and Livestock Idemnity Program (LIP). Signup began on Sept. 10, 2007, for the two programs that provide aid to livestock producers who suffered eligible livestock and livestock feed losses between Jan. 1, 2005 and Dec. 30, 2007, because of a natural disaster. Contact the Farm Service Agency at (601) 635-2556, extension 100 for more details.
Farm services
• Are you a farmer, rancher or producer of agricultural products? If so, the U.S. Department of Agriculture encourages you to act now! USDA is looking for nominations from all producers, especially minority producers. Nominations will be accepted from June 15 until August 1. Fundraiser
• Vernon Grove Masonic Lodge #351 of Decatur will host a Gospel Singing Fund-raiser on June 29 at 5 p.m. featuring The Pine Ridge Combined Choir of Decatur and Sis. Dorothy Wooten and the Golden Bells of Meridian. Your support is greatly appreciated. Pastor: Rev. Tony Jordan.
Golf Tournament
• A Union Golf Tournament, 3 man, 4 ball will be held June 21 and 22 at the Union Country Club. Entry fee is $35. This tournament is sponsored by Union Discount Drugs. For more info call Jamie Ferguson at (601) 480-0606.
Support Group
• The Newton County Area Lupus Support Group will meet Saturday, June 28, at 4 p.m. at Central Mississippi Residential Center. This is the location of the old Clarke College, on U.S. 80. Training
• Free teacher training June 27, 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., at Lauderdale County Extension Office. Receive personal finance curriculum for grades K-12, including NEFE High School Financial Planning Program. Participants will receive .5 CEU at no cost. Limited space. Register by June 20.
