School News
• Newton County Academy will host its 3rd annual BACK TO SCHOOL PICNIC on Friday, August 8. Meet your teachers for the upcoming school year at 6 p.m. and we will eat hamburgers and hotdogs on the elementary playground around 6:30 p.m. Any questions, call the school office at 601-635-2756 or email Angela Craven at thecravens@hotmail.com. Don’t forget to bring your lawn chairs!
• The first day for students to report for classes at Union Public Schools. A news article was sent with an incorrect starting date of August 4. Wednesday, August 6, will be the beginning day for students to report for classes.

ServeSafe Food
• ServSafe food safety certification class will be held in Decatur at the Newton County Extension Office August 21-22 - 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration deadline is August 7. Cost of the class is $125. Must have 5th edition of ServSafe book. For more information, contact 601-635-2267.

Photos Needed
• A group of people looking for “old photographs” of Lawrence to hang in the old school house. They want any old photos of Lawrence .... depot ... old buildings ... school house etc. They will have the photos scanned so the originals can stay with the owner. Then they will be printed and hung in the old schoolhouse. The contact person is Patty Byrne at 601-683-3734.  

Club Meetings
• Lawrence Community Club meets the first Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Come and enjoy good food, timely information and fellowship. Bring your family.
• Conehatta Community Club invites each of you to join us each month on the third Thursday at 6 p.m. for fellowship, food, fun and always timely information. Bring a friend.
• Liberty Community Club meets the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. in the club house on Liberty Church Road. There is always good food and excellent fellowship as well as an informative program each month. The public is invited to come join us.
• Newton County Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors meets the second Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. at East Central Community College in the Executive Conference Room.
• The Busy Hands Quilting Guild will meet at our regular time on the second Tuesday of August at the Newton County Extension Building.

Volunteers Needed

Family Reunions
• The Cullum Annual Reunion will be held on Saturday, July 19, at the Masonic Lodge in Little Rock. Friends and family are welcome. Bring your favorite covered dish and visit. If you have any questions, please contact Mary Cullum at 601-635-3141.
• Descendants of Anna Hill and Alonzo Calvin Meaders will gather for the Annual Reunion on July 19 in the Hickory Chamber of Commerce Building (former high school cafeteria) next to gymnasium. Time to meet is 10 a.m., a catered lunch will be served at 12 noon. Visitation follows. Bring family pictures and cameras. The theme is Together Again.
• A family reunion will be held for the descendants of William Washington Thomas and Lena Catherine Phillips Thomas at the Leake Academy Cafeteria in Madden on Saturday, July 19 at 11 a.m. Bring a covered dish and any pictures, family information or special memories to share. Please write down a memory to add to our collection of memories.
• Rigdon-Todd Family Reunion - Brothers and sisters and children of David Todd and Bessie Mae Rigdon are invited to a reunion at Turkey Creek Water Park in Decatur on Saturday, July 19 from 8 am to 8 pm. Bring your lawn chairs and a covered dish.

Basketball Camp
• Final applications are now being evaluated for the Ten Star All Star Summer Basketball Camp. This camp is by invitation only. Boys and girls ages 10-19 are eligible to apply. College Basketball scholarships are possible for players selected to the All-American Team. Camp locations include Tenn., Calif, Fla., Ga., Ill, NJ, Texas and Va. 4-H News
• If you are age 14-18 and interested in becoming a 4-H teen leader to help teach the Health Rocks curriculum, please call the 4-H office at 601-635-2268. We will teach the curriculum from July through November during various club meetings, retreats and day camps.

FSA News

Donations
• An account has been set up at the Citizen’s Bank in Decatur for Billy Ray Walters. Mr. Walters is a cancer patient and does not have insurance. Anyone interested in making a donation may contact Citizen’s Bank at (601) 635-2321.
• An account has been opened for Michael Hammond at Great Southern National Bank, 15122 Miss. 15 S in Decatur. Mike is a cancer patient, who is unable to work and does not have insurance coverage. Donations may be made at any Great Southern National Bank branch.
• An account has been set up Citizens Bank in Decatur for William Lawson. William has been diagnosed with liver and lung cancer. He has a broken back and is living in a tent. He is asking for prayers and donations. For more info call (601) 562-4930 or (318) 746-0449.

Music

Softball Tournament
• Men and Women Softball Tournament July 26 & 27 at Wade Park in Newton. U-trip rules: Any 44 or 47 core balls (3HR/out). Library News
• Friends of the Library are sponsoring a poetry sharing session in the library’s conference room at 4 p.m. on Aug. 6. Everyone is invited. You may share your own poetry or someone else’s (properly credited) which is moving or inspiring. No fee’s and no registration is necessary.

Political Event
• An event honoring Gregg Harper, Republican candidate for Congress for the Third Congressional District, has been planned for Thursday, September 25, at 6 p.m. in Mabry Memorial Cafeteria at East Central Community College. Lois Cooper, Newton County Gregg Harper Campaign Chairman, stated that tickets will go on sale in July. Harper is running as a Republican Candidate for the Third Congressional District in the November general election. Tickets for the event will be $25 each. A meal will be served and entertainment will be provided. Tickets may be purchased from any Newton County Gregg Harper Campaign committee member.
