School News
• Newton County Academy will host its 3rd annual BACK TO SCHOOL PICNIC on Friday, August 8. Meet your teachers for the upcoming school year at 6 p.m. and we will eat hamburgers and hotdogs on the elementary playground around 6:30 p.m. If you have any questions, call the school office at 601-635-2756 or email Angela Craven at thecravens@ hotmail.com. Don’t forget to bring your lawn chairs!
• The impossible to intimidate class of ‘98 is planning their class reunion the first weekend in September. If you need any more information, please contact Tamia Jones (601) 781-0173, Brian Ford (601) 480-6601 or Juwan Watts (601) 616-9023.
• Newton Public School is having a Back to School Gala August 4 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Newton Depot. Activities include: meet the 2008 Tiger principals, superintendent and coaching staff, win school supplies, free popcorn and sodas, meet the 2008 Tigers and cheerleaders, hear the NHS marching band and more!
Parents and students can visit Newton Elementary School, Pilate Middle School, and Newton High School from 5:30 p.m. - 7 p.m. on August 4 for Open House. Meet teachers, tour the campus, and pick up class schedules and test scores. New students can pick up a registration packet at this time.
• Back to School Spirit Rally for students, parents and all concerned citizens on August 16 at CMRC (old Clark College) from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. All area churches are invited. Come meet your new superintendant, and new principals. School clothes and door prizes will be given away. Lunch will be served. For more info contact Ms. Eva McDonald (601) 683-2787.
• The Newton High School Class of 2004 will have their first 5 year reunion planning meeting on August 9. If you are a NHS ‘04 grad and would like to be on the reunion planning committee contact Shunda Bogan at (601) 678-1693 or ShundaJSU@yahoo.com.
• The Newton County Band Boosters will hold a potluck supper on August 7, at 6:30 P.M. in the High School Cafeteria. All Newton County Band Parents are encouraged to attend. Bring your favorite covered dish and a drink. There will be drawings for door prizes. The High School Band will provide entertainment. Forinformation call Betty Raines at 601-774-7405.
• Union Public Schools to hold Open House on August 5, 1 to 6 p.m. Parents and guardians are urged to attend with students. Gene Cliburn, UES Principal, advises that his faculty for Pre-K through 4th Grade will be in the classrooms to meet with parents and students. Students will be directed to homerooms. Joey Ezelle, UHS Principal, will be available to show off new renovations at the the High School. Brett Rigby, UMS Principal, invites all to visit at Open House from 1 to 6 p.m., and issues a special notice of two sessions for Fifth Grade Orientation, one 4:30 to 5 p.m., and the second session 5 to 5:30 p.m. All fifth grade parents and guardians are urged to attend. Wednesday, April 6, is the first day students report to class.
• Newton Youth Football and Cheerleading ‘08 Registration and Fund Raiser Sat., Aug. 2 at Esco Park. Come and register your child for football or cheerleading, ages 7-12 by Sept. 1. Some items for sale are fish, hot dogs, hamburgers, drinks, slushes and more. Bring your lawn chairs and stay awhile.
ServeSafe Food
• ServSafe food safety certification class will be held in Decatur at the Newton County Extension Office August 21-22 - 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration deadline is August 7. Cost of the class is $125. Must have 5th edition of ServSafe book. For more information, contact 601-635-2267.
Photos Needed
• A group of people looking for “old photographs” of Lawrence to hang in the old school house. They want any old photos of Lawrence .... depot ... old buildings ... school house etc. They will have the photos scanned so the originals can stay with the owner. Then they will be printed and hung in the old schoolhouse. The contact person is Patty Byrne at 601-683-3734.
Club Meetings
• Lawrence Community Club meets the first Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Come and enjoy good food, timely information and fellowship. Bring your family.
• Conehatta Community Club invites each of you to join us each month on the third Thursday at 6 p.m. for fellowship, food, fun and always timely information. Bring a friend.
• Liberty Community Club meets the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. in the club house on Liberty Church Road. There is always good food and excellent fellowship as well as an informative program each month. The public is invited to come join us.
• Newton County Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors meets the second Tuesday of each month at 5 p.m. at the United Methodist”e on the second Tuesday of August at the Newton County Extension Building.
FSA News
• Are you a farmer, rancher or producer of agricultural products? If so, the U.S. Department of Agriculture encourages you to act now! USDA is looking for nominations from all producers, especially minority producers. Nominations will be accepted until August 1. Become a member of your Farm Service Agency County Committee. Library News
• The Friends of the Library are sponsoring a poetry sharing session in the library’s conference room at 4 p.m. on Aug. 6. Everyone is invited. You may share your own poetry or someone else’s (properly credited) which you moving or inspiring. There are no fee’s and no registration is necessary.
• The library has received donations of old books and a set of encyclopedias. These books are in good condition and are available to anyone who would like to come and get them.
Family Reunions
• The descendants of Irvin and Molly Thompson will hold their annual Thompson Reunion August 3 at the Newton Christian Service Camp on Hwy 15. Lunch will be served at noon. Bring your favorite dish and join the fun and fellowship.
Music
• Lou’s Pavilion will be hosting gospel group New Born, Saturday, August 2, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The group Hayes Crossing will be there along with Crossroad Bluegrass. If you are anyone you know would like to show off their talent give us a call at 601-774-8339.
Political Event
• An event honoring Gregg Harper, Republican candidate for Congress for the Third Congressional District, has been planned for Thursday, September 25, at 6 p.m. in Mabry Memorial Cafeteria at ECCC. Lois Cooper, Newton County Gregg Harper Campaign Chairman, stated that tickets are on sale for $25 each. Tickets may be purchased from any Newton County Gregg Harper Campaign committee member. For tickets call in Newton: 601-683-2790 or 601-683-3694 and in Decatur: 601-635-2459 or 601-635-3141.Harper is running as a Republican Candidate for the Third Congressional District in the November general election. A meal will be served and entertainment will be provided.
Donations
• An account has been set up at the Citizen’s Bank in Decatur for Billy Ray Walters. Mr. Walters is a cancer patient and does not have insurance. Anyone interested in making a donation may contact Citizen’s Bank at (601) 635-2321.
• An account has been opened for Michael Hammond at Great Southern National Bank, 15122 Miss. 15 S in Decatur. Mike is a cancer patient, who is unable to work and does not have insurance coverage. Donations may be made at any Great Southern National Bank branch.
• An account has been set up Citizens Bank in Decatur for William Lawson. William has been diagnosed with liver and lung cancer. He has a broken back and is living in a tent. He is asking for prayers and donations. For more info call (601) 562-4930 or (318) 746-0449.
• An account has been set up for Billy Brierly at both Newton County Bank and East Central MS Credit Union. Billy has cancer, will be undergoing surgery soon, and has been unable to work since April. Donations and prayers are appreciated.

4-H News
• If you are age 14-18 and interested in becoming a 4-H teen leader to help teach the Health Rocks curriculum, please call the 4-H office at 601-635-2268. We will teach the curriculum from July through November during various club meetings, retreats and day camps.

Basketball Camp
• A baseball tryout and hitting camp will be held at Smith-Wills Stadium at 1200 Lakeland Drive in Jackson on Saturday, August 9. Tryouts are at 10 a.m. and Hitting Camp is at 2 p.m. Tryout cost is $25, Hitting Camp is $50, and to attend both events is $65.
