NEWTON School News

• Back to School Spirit Rally for students, parents and all concerned citizens on August 16 at CMRC (old Clark College) from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. All area churches are invited. Come meet your new superintendant, and new principals. School clothes and door prizes will be given away. Lunch will be served. For more info contact Ms. Eva McDonald (601) 683-2787.

• A Back to School Explosion aimed at alleviating tobacco use by youth. Special guest from the movie “Coach Ken Carter”. Aug. 15 from 1:30 p.m. - 3 p.m. at Newton High School Gym, 201 West First St. in Newton. For more info. call the office (601) 479-0753 or the school (601) 683-2232.

• Newton County Youth Football and Cheerleading sign up will be held in the Newton County Elementary School Gym on Aug. 16 from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. Age eligibility is 8 to 12 yrs. old as of Sept. 1, ‘08. Cost for football is $50 for the first child and $40 for each child afterwards. Cheerleading registration is $20.



Photos Needed

• A group of people looking for “old photographs” of Lawrence to hang in the old school house. They want any old photos of Lawrence .... depot ... old buildings ... school house etc. They will have the photos scanned so the originals can stay with the owner. Then they will be printed and hung in the old schoolhouse. The contact person is Patty Byrne at 601-683-3734.  



Club Meetings

• Lawrence Community Club meets the first Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Come and enjoy good food, timely information and fellowship. Bring your family.

• Conehatta Community Club invites each of you to join us each month on the third Thursday at 6 p.m. for fellowship, food, fun and always timely information. Bring a friend.

• Liberty Community Club meets the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. in the club house on Liberty Church Road. There is always good food and excellent fellowship as well as an informative program each month. The public is invited to come join us.

• Newton County Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors meets the second Tuesday of each month at 5 p.m. at the United Methodist Church.

• Busy Hands Quilting Guild will meet at the Newton County Extension meeting room froom 10a.m. until 4 p.m. on August 12. Lunch will be on your own. We will sit and sew on any projects you have in progress until 11:30. At 1 p.m. Dianne Smith and Ann Carlton will present a program on borders.

4-H News

• If you are age 14-18 and interested in becoming a 4-H teen leader to help teach the Health Rocks curriculum, please call the 4-H office at 601-635-2268. We will teach the curriculum from July through November during various club meetings, retreats and day camps.

Wheelchairs

• The Senior Wheels U.S.A. Program makes available Power Wheelchairs to Senior citizens and the permanently disabled at no cost, if they qualify. The Power wheelchairs are provided to those who can no longer walk nor self-propel a manual wheelchair, who meet the additional guidelines of the program. No deposit is required. Basketball Camp

• A baseball tryout and hitting camp will be held at Smith-Wills Stadium at 1200 Lakeland Drive in Jackson on Saturday, August 9. Library News

• The library has received donations of old books and a set of encyclopedias. These books are in good condition and are available to anyone who would like to come and get them.

• Storytime for Preschoolers will resume at the J. Elliot McMullan Public Library on September 3 from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. All children are welcome. This program will take place on a Wednesday of each month, September through April.

• Author Angel Braham will speak at the library on Aug. 15 at 9 a.m. Angel wrote the inspirational teen romance, “Driven To Live”.



Head Start

• Crossroads Head Start Center will have orientation on Thursday, August 7 at 6 p.m. Opening Day is Thursdsay, August 14.



MSU High School Band

• Students in grade 9-12 who are members of their high school band are invited to register by Aug. 29 for an opportunity to perform with the MSU band on Sept. 6. Space is limited to the first 250 pre-paid registrations. Cost is $25 per student and covers lunch, game admission and souvenir t-shirt. For more info call 662-325-2713.



Political Event

• An event honoring Gregg Harper, Republican candidate for Congress for the Third Congressional District, has been planned for Thursday, September 25, at 6 p.m. in Mabry Memorial Cafeteria at East Central Community College. Lois Cooper, Newton County Gregg Harper Campaign Chairman, stated that tickets will go on sale in July. Harper is running as a Republican Candidate for the Third Congressional District in the November general election. Tickets for the event will be $25 each. A meal will be served and entertainment will be provided. Tickets may be purchased from any Newton County Gregg Harper Campaign committee member. Free Classes

• Free Classes Offered at Pendleton Square Learning Center in Philadelphia includes GED Preparation Classes and Basic Skills (ABE) Classes. Classes or one-on-one tutoring help you improve skills for GED testing or employment. Instruction includes skill development in:
