Open House
Everyone is invited to attend the Newton County Extension Office open house on August 28 from 2 - 5:30 p.m. Please come and join us for refreshments and to see what MSU Extension has to offer to the young and old. We will begin enrollment for the new 4-H year as well as Cloverbuds. Come and check out our new programs!!
School News

Newton County High School chairback season tickets for the five home games will go on sale Aug. 21 at the High School office. Tickets will be $25 ($5 per game) and be sold on a first come basis. Tickets ensure a chairback seat for each High School game. Seats are numbered and can be selected at the time of purchase.
Newton Vocational/N.H. Pilate Alumni meeting will be held Thursday, August 28 at 6 p.m. at Central Mississippi Residential Center.
Photos Needed
A group of people looking for “old photographs” of Lawrence to hang in the old school house. They want any old photos of Lawrence .... depot ... old buildings ... school house etc. They will have the photos scanned so the originals can stay with the owner. Then they will be printed and hung in the old schoolhouse. The contact person is Patty Byrne at 601-683-3734.
Club Meetings
Lawrence Community Club meets the first Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Come and enjoy good food, timely information and fellowship. Bring your family.
Conehatta Community Club invites each of you to join us each month on the third Thursday at 6 p.m. for fellowship, food, fun and always timely information. Bring a friend.
Liberty Community Club meets the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. in the club house on Liberty Church Road. There is always good food and excellent fellowship as well as an informative program each month. The public is invited to come join us.
Newton County Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors meets the second Tuesday of each month at 5 p.m. at the United Methodist Church.

4-H News
If you are age 14-18 and interested in becoming a 4-H teen leader to help teach the Health Rocks curriculum, please call the 4-H office at 601-635-2268. We will teach the curriculum from July through November during various club meetings, retreats and day camps.
Library News
The library has received donations of old books and a set of encyclopedias. These books are in good condition and are available to anyone who would like to come and get them.
Storytime for Preschoolers will resume at the J. Elliot McMullan Public Library on September 3 from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. All children are welcome. This program will take place on a Wednesday of each month, September through April.
High School Band
Students in grade 9-12 who are members of their high school band are invited to register by Aug. 29 for an opportunity to perform with the MSU band on Sept. 6. Space is limited to the first 250 pre-paid registrations. Cost is $25 per student and covers lunch, game admission and souvenir t-shirt. For more info call 662-325-2713.
Political Events
The public is invited to join U.S. Senator Roger Wicker for a catfish meal on Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Back 40 Restaurant in Lake. Get to know our new senator and hear short speeches from several statewide and local elected officials. Cost is $15. For more info call 601-755-9212.
An event honoring Gregg Harper, Republican candidate for Congress for the Third Congressional District, has been planned for Thursday, September 25, at 6 p.m. in Mabry Memorial Cafeteria at East Central Community College. Lois Cooper, Newton County Gregg Harper Campaign Chairman, stated that tickets will go on sale in July. Harper is running as a Republican Candidate for the Third Congressional District in the November general election. Tickets for the event will be $25 each. A meal will be served and entertainment will be provided. Tickets may be purchased from any Newton County Gregg Harper Campaign committee member. Free Classes
Free casses offered at Pendleton Square Learning Center in Philadelphia includes GED Preparation Classes and Basic Skills (ABE) Classes. Classes or one-on-one tutoring help you improve skills for GED testing or employment. Instruction includes skill development in: Short-term Training. A computerized program helps students learn, practice and apply basic entry-level skills in: Food Service, Health, Retail, Clerical, Customer Service and Basic Computer Literacy Training. Blood Drives
Did you know that every three seconds someone needs a blood transfusion? Donate at one of the following drives in your community. First Baptist Church in Union from 12 noon-4 p.m. on Sept. 14; Decatur United Methodist Church from 12 noon-4 p.m. on Sept. 21 Newton County Elementary School from 2 p.m.-7 p.m. on Sept. 25.
Adult Education
Newton Career Center will have the following adult education classes beginning Sept. 16: Intermediate Clothing, Computer Keyboarding/Intro to Computers, Advanced & Basic Conversational Spanish, Advanced & Basic Cake Decorating, Home Improvement & Repair. Registration is Sept. 9 at 6 p.m. Classes begin Sept. 16 at 6-8 p.m. $50 per class. Classes last ten weeks. For more info call 601-683-6338.
Family Reunions
The Dean Reunion will be held on August 30 at Hopewell Baptist Church Fellowship Hall in Little Rock. Bring your favorite dish for the noon meal and enjoy family and fellowship. Call 601-986-2358.

Fashion Show
Ebonny Towel Birthday Club presents its Annual Fashion Show at the Newton Historical Depot August 30 at 6 p.m. The theme will be What Does Your Hat Say? Hats will be judged is these categories: smallest, largest, sport, elegant, ugliest. Prizes will be given.
Dance
The Historic American Legion Post will sponsor a fall dance Sept. 13 from 8 p.m. - 12 midnight featuring Night Shift from Neshoba County.
