NEWTON School News

• The impossible to intimidate class of ‘98 is planning their class reunion the first weekend in September. If you need any more information, please contact Tamia Jones (601) 781-0173, Brian Ford (601) 480-6601 or Juwan Watts (601) 616-9023.

• Newton Co. High School chairback season tickets for the five home games are on at the High School office. Tickets will be $25 ($5 per game) and be sold on a first come basis. Tickets ensure a chairback seat for each High School game. Seats are numbered and can be selected at the time of purchase.



Photos Needed

• A group of people looking for “old photographs” of Lawrence to hang in the old school house. They want any old photos of Lawrence .... depot ... old buildings ... school house etc. They will have the photos scanned so the originals can stay with the owner. Then they will be printed and hung in the old schoolhouse. The contact person is Patty Byrne at 601-683-3734.  



Clubs and Meetings

• Lawrence Community Club meets the first Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Come and enjoy good food, timely information and fellowship. Bring your family.

• Conehatta Community Club invites each of you to join us each month on the third Thursday at 6 p.m. for fellowship, food, fun and always timely information. Bring a friend.

• Liberty Community Club meets the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. in the club house on Liberty Church Road. There is always good food and excellent fellowship as well as an informative program each month. The public is invited to come join us.

• Newton County Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors meets the second Tuesday of each month at 5 p.m. at the United Methodist Church.

• Newton County Chapter of Miss. Retired Educational Personnel will meet on Sept. 18 at 1:30 p.m. in the Gold Room of the ECCC Cafeteria. The organization is open to anyone retired from the Public Employees Retirement System and who worked in any capacity in the field of education. The speaker for the Sept. 18 meeting will be Tanya Boler, English Instructor at ECCC. Her topic will be “How Technology Has Changed the Teaching Profession” and will cover a number of technological advances and how they have changed the teaching profession. All retired teachers will be interested in Tanya’s presentation.

• Newton County Cattlemens Association will meet on Sept. 25, at 6:30 p.m. at the Coastal Plains Experiment Station. If you would like to attend this meeting please call Leanne McGee at 601-635-2267.

Library News

• The library has received donations of old books and a set of encyclopedias. These books are in good condition and are available to anyone who would like to come and get them.

• Storytime for Preschoolers will resume at the J. Elliot McMullan Public Library on September 3 from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. All children are welcome. This program will take place on a Wednesday of each month, September through April.



Free Classes

• Free Classes Offered at Pendleton Square Learning Center in Philadelphia includes GED Preparation Classes and Basic Skills (ABE) Classes. Classes or one-on-one tutoring help you improve skills for GED testing or employment. Instruction includes skill development in: Short-term Training. A computerized program helps students learn, practice and apply basic entry-level skills in: Food Service, Health, Retail, Clerical, Customer Service and Basic Computer Literacy Training. Blood Drives

• Did you know that every three seconds someone needs a blood transfusion? Donate at one of the following drives in your community. First Baptist Church in Union from 12 noon-4 p.m. on Sept. 14; Decatur United Methodist Church from 12 noon-4 p.m. on Sept. 21 Newton County Elementary School from 2 p.m.-7 p.m. on Sept. 25.



Family Reunions

• The McElhenney family reunion will be held on Sept. 20 at the Baptist Meeting Hall on Hwy 15 between Decatur and Newton. Follow the Baptist Camp sign. Reunion starts at 10 a.m. Lunch will be at 12 noon. Bring a covered dish. For more info call JoAnn McElhenney Estes at 601-634-2034.



Dance

• The historic American Legion Post will sponsor a fall dance Sept. 13 from 8 p.m. - 12 midnight featuring Night Shift from Neshoba County.



Diabetic/Arthritis

Dinner/Movie

• The Scarecrow committee of Sebastopol will be hosting a dinner and movie in Bishop Park Saturday, September 20. Hamburger and hotdog plates will be served at 6 p.m. for $5 and include a drink. Admission is free. The movie will begin at 7 p.m. /dark. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets. No outside food or drinks will be allowed. •The Newton Theatre Co. presents “My Fair Lady” at the Roxy theatre in Newton on Thursday Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. with the gala at Newton Co. Bank following. Tickets are $15 for this performance and the gala. Sat. Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. and Sun. 28 at 2 p.m. Tickets for these performances are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12. Festival

• An event honoring Gregg Harper, Republican candidate for Congress for the Third Congressional District, has been planned for Thursday, Sept. 25, at 6 p.m. in Mabry Memorial Cafeteria at East Central Community College. 4-H News

• If you are age 14-18 and interested in becoming a 4-H teen leader to help teach the Health Rocks curriculum, please call the 4-H office at 601-635-2268. We will teach the curriculum from July through November during various club meetings, retreats and day camps.



Adult Education

• Newton Career Center is offering adult education classes beginning Sept. 16: Intermediate Clothing, Computer Keyboarding/Intro to Computers, Advanced & Basic Conversational Spanish, Advanced & Basic Cake Decorating, Home Improvement & Repair.
