The Newton Record

NEWTON School News

• Newton Co. High School chairback season tickets for the five home games are on at the High School office. Tickets will be $25 ($5 per game) and be sold on a first come basis. Tickets ensure a chairback seat for each High School game. Seats are numbered and can be selected at the time of purchase.

• Newton County Career Center FCCLA will be selling mums Sept. 3-19 for $5 each available in five colors. Call Brooke Sibley at 601-635-4138.

• The next ACT test will be administered on Oct. 25. Students who wish to take the college admission and placement exam must register by Sept. 19. The cost is $31 for the traditional ACT and $46 for the ACT plus writing. Students can register online and get more info at www.actstudent.org.



Clubs/Meetings

• Newton County Cattlemens Association will meet on Sept. 25, at 6:30 p.m. at the Coastal Plains Experiment Station. If you would like to attend this meeting please call Leanne McGee at 601-635-2267.

• The Newton County Chapter of the Miss. Retired Educational Personnel will meet on Sept. 18 at 1:30 p.m. in the Gold Room of the ECCC Cafeteria. The organization is open to anyone retired from the Public Employees Retirement System and who worked in any capacity in the field of education. The speaker for the Sept. 18 meeting will be Tanya Boler, English Instructor at ECCC. Her topic will be “How Technology Has Changed the Teaching Profession” and will cover a number of technological advances and how they have changed the teaching profession. All retired teachers will be interested in Tanya’s presentation.



Library News

• The library has received donations of old books and a set of encyclopedias. These books are in good condition and are available to anyone who would like to come and get them.

• Storytime for Preschoolers began at the J. Elliot McMullan Public Library. This program will take place on a Wednesday of each month, September through April from 10 to 10:30 a.m. All children are welcome.



Blood Drives

• Did you know that every three seconds someone needs a blood transfusion? Donate at one of the following drives in your community. Union First Baptist Church from 12 noon-4 p.m. on Sept. 14; Decatur United Methodist Church from 12 noon-4 p.m. on Sept. 21; Newton County Elementary School from 2 p.m.-7 p.m. on Sept. 25; Hickory Baptist Church from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Sept. 28.



Adult Education

• Newton Career Center will have the following adult education classes beginning Sept. 16: Intermediate Clothing, Computer Keyboarding/Intro to Computers, Advanced & Basic Conversational Spanish, Advanced & Basic Cake Decorating, Home Improvement & Repair. Registration is Sept. 9 at 6 p.m. Classes begin Sept. 16 at 6-8 p.m. $50 per class. Classes last ten weeks. For more info call 601-683-6338.



Family Reunions

• The McElhenney family reunion will be held Sept. 20 at the Baptist Meeting Hall on Hwy 15 between Decatur and Newton. Follow the Baptist Camp sign. Reunion starts at 10 a.m. Lunch will be at 12 noon. Bring a covered dish. For more info call JoAnn McElhenney Estes at 601-634-2034.

• The Loper Family Reunion, which was postponed due to unfortunate circumstances, has been rescheduled for Sept. 21 at Lou’s Pavilion. We want every one to come and see our newest additions, reunite with family near and far. For more info call us at 601-692-8840.

• The Mayes family reunion will be Sept. 28 at the Union City Park. We encourage all relatives and friends to bring food and enjoy. A letter was sent to give details of this event but if you have not read this you may call Kay @601-527-4143. Lunch will be at 1 p.m. Please come early and stay late!



Dance

• The Historic American Legion Post will sponsor a fall dance Sept. 13 from 8 p.m. - 12 midnight featuring Night Shift from Neshoba County.



Diabetic/Arthritis

• Free diabetic/arthritis kits with doctors perscription. Arthritis kits include knee, back/ shoulder braces. Diabetic kits include Glucose monitor/meters, heating pads and pumps. Call 601-616-8893.



Dinner/Movie

• The Scarecrow committee of Sebastopol will be hosting a dinner and movie in Bishop Park Saturday, Sept. 20. Hamburger and hotdog plates will be served at 6 p.m. for $5 and include a drink. Admission is free. The movie will begin at 7 p.m. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets. No outside food or drinks will be allowed. Proceeds benefit the 2nd annual Sebastopolooza Fall Festival and 5K Run/Walk, to be held October 25. For more info call Sebastopol Town Hall at 601.625.7200.



Theatre

•The Newton Theatre Co. presents “My Fair Lady” at the Roxy theatre in Newton on Thursday Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. with the gala at Newton Co. Bank following. Tickets are $15 for this performance and the gala. Sat. Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. and Sun. 28 at 2 p.m. Tickets for these performances are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12. • Meridian Little Theatre open the season Oct. 2-8 with “Annie”. Festival

Golf Tournament

• Becky Ceartas from the Rural Advancement Foundation International-USA will be talking with contract poultry growers about the new protections enacted into law with the 2008 Farm Bill as well as existing protections under the Packers and Stockyards Act. Political Events

• An event honoring Gregg Harper, Republican candidate for Congress for the Third Congressional District, has been planned for Thursday, Sept. 25, at 6 p.m. in Mabry Memorial Cafeteria at East Central Community College. Harper is running as a Republican Candidate for the Third Congressional District in the November general election. Photos Needed

• A group of people looking for “old photographs” of Lawrence to hang in the old school house. They want any old photos of Lawrence .... depot ... old buildings ... school house etc. They will have the photos scanned so the originals can stay with the owner.
