The Newton Record

NEWTON Christmas Bazar

•The Annual Auxiliary Christmas Bazaar and Bake Sale will be held on Dec. 5. The Bazaar will be held at Newton Regional Hospital in the Conference room from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.



Fall Festivals

• Decatur Business Association is inviting the public to the 2nd Annual Fall Bash in Downtown Decatur on October 30 and 31. Activities include: Thursday, Oct. 30 Treat Street on Broad Street from 5-7 p.m. and the Haunted House and Decatur Fire Dept. 7 p.m.- until. Friday, Oct. 31, The Haunted House at Decatur Fire Dept. 7 p.m.- until.

• Lake High School will have a fall carnival on Oct. 25 from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. Admission $2. Cake walk, fun jump, face painting, basketball throw, toy walk and more.

• Newton County Academy will host their 37th annual Fall Festival on October 25 from 3-7 p.m. At 7:30 p.m. we will have the presentation of the Royal Court and the announcement of the 2008 King and Queen. Everyone is invited to attend. For more info. call 601-635-2756.

• CMRC will host their annual Treat Street on Oct. 30 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. featuring lots and lots of candy, $3 for one child and $5 for two. Free events include live entertainment, hay maze and climbing wall. Purchase $1 tickets for pony rides, inflatables and a cake walk. Parking is $2.



Military Police

• The 2nd Security Bn (Military Police) is looking for volunteers that want to be trained as MP’s in the Mississippi State Guard. Mississippi State Guard is a volunteer military force that is activated by the Governor in a time of crisis in the State of Mississippi. For information contact Maj. Trick or Treating

• The Mayor and Board of Aldermen have set Thursday night, Oct. 30 from 5-7 p.m. as the night and hours for trick or treat in Decatur.



Library News

• Storytime for Preschoolers began at the J. Elliot McMullan Public Library. This program will be on Wednesday of each month through April from 10 to 10:30 a.m. All children are welcome.



Diabetic/Arthritis

• Free diabetic/arthritis kits with doctors prescription. Arthritis kits include knee, back/ shoulder braces. Diabetic kits include Glucose monitor/meters, heating pads and pumps. Call 601-616-8893.



Pageants

• Little Miss Mississippi Preliminary Pageant in Philadelphia, Oct. 25. LMM is open to all girls 0-20 years old and boys 0-12 years old. Preliminary winners will go to state competition in June. Trophies, crowns and banners awarded. For a form or more info. call 601-845-3280.

• Miss Magnolia State Pageant will be held Dec. 6 and 7 at the Vicksburg City Auditorium in Vicksburg. Applications are currently being accepted for contestants. Deadline to enter is Nov. 10. Contact Chris Shannon at 601-892-3982 or MSPageantNews@aol.com



Basketball

• Newton Parks and Recreation Youth Basketball Registration for boys and girls ages 6-12 interested in playing league basketball will be at city hall in Newton. Registration fee is $20 pus cost of jersey. Deadline is Nov. 14. Must be 6 yrs. old before Feb. 1 ‘09. Call 601-683-2870.



Golf Tournaments

• Beaver Creek Golf Club - American Legion, Nov. 1; Halloween Tournament, Nov. 1 Kids Night.



ACT Testing

• ACT test will be administered Oct. 25. Students must be pre-register. The cost is $31 for the traditional ACT and $46 for the ACT plus writing. Students can register online and get info at www.actstudent.org.



Cyber Cafe

•Pendleton Square Cyber Cafe is open to the public Mon.-Thurs. 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Free GED classes Mon. and Wed. 9 a.m.- 12 noon. Free Basic Computer Workshop-10 wk. Register today. Halloween Dance

• Come celebrate Halloween at Lou’s Pavilion with a costume contest and a country dance on Oct. 25 from 6 p.m.-10 p.m. The winner of the best costume will win $25. Music will be provided by Hayes Crossing, Crossroads Bluegrass plus and more. Your band could be there too, just call 601-774-8339.



Donations

• An account has been opened for Michael Hammond at Great Southern National Bank, 15122 Miss. 15 S in Decatur. Mike is a cancer patient, who is unable to work and does not have insurance coverage. Donations may be made at any Great Southern National Bank branch.

• An account has been set up Citizens Bank in Decatur for William Lawson. William has been diagnosed with liver and lung cancer. For more info call (601) 562-4930 or (318) 746-0449.

• An account has been set up for Billy Brierly at both Newton County Bank and East Central MS Credit Union. Billy has cancer, will be undergoing surgery. Donations and prayers are appreciated.

• An account has been set up at the Citizen’s Bank in Decatur for Billy Ray Walters. Mr. Walters is a cancer patient and does not have insurance. Anyone interested in making a donation may contact Citizen’s Bank at (601) 635-2321.



Christmas Angel Tree

• The Salvation Army at 117 6th Ave. will begin taking applications for Christmas assistance on Oct. 20-24 and 27-31 from 9-11 a.m. and 1-2 p.m. Children must be between ages 0-12. Call 601-483-6156 for required information needed.



School News

• Crossroads Head Start at 401 E. Railroad St. will be hosting a parade on Oct. 30 at 4 p.m. in recognition of Head Start Awareness Month. If you or your agency would like to participate in this event call 601-683-3161.



Banquets

• Outdoors Without Limits, a non-profit disability outreach program, is holding its first annual fund raising dinner and banquet at the Newton Country Club on Nov. 8. Doors open at 6 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m. with auction following. Ticket prices are $35 for singles, $50 for couples, $250 for sponsors. Call 601-575-4019 or 662-803-1134.



Entertainment

• Music in the park at the Depot. Songwriters will be singing original music at 7 p.m. at the gazebo behind Newton’s Historical Depot. Food and drinks will be available. Bring your lawn chairs.
