Jackets drop three straight

UNION The Union Yellowjackets struggled on the baseball diamond last week, losing all three of their games to fall to 2-6.

Last Friday’s Division 5-2A game with Forest was rained out.

Union is playing in the Lake Tournament this week and will face Taylorsville today at 1 p.m. The ‘Jackets go to DeKalb on March 18 to face Kemper County.



Lake 5, Union 3

Strikeouts continued to plaque the ‘Jackets in Thursday’s 5-3 Division 5-2A loss to Lake at Union.

The ‘Jackets fanned 17 times and had 42 whiffs in a three-game stretch. Union fell to 1-1 in 5-2A and 2-4 overall.

Lake took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning with Colton Mitchell getting a two-run single.

Union rallied to within 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth as Trey Sistunk and

Jonathan Gibbs walked and Garrett Clark delivered a two-run double.

The ‘Jackets tied the game in the fifth.

The Hornets recaptured the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh.

Sistrunk (1-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits and five walks in five innings. He struck out eight.

Rusty Belenchia tossed the final two frames for Union, giving up two runs on two hits.



Morton 16, Union 6

Morton negated a 3-1 Union lead with seven runs in the fourth inning of Saturday’s game at Southeast Lauderdale.

Trey Sistrunk had a double and a home run for Union, 2-5. Brandon Kennedy had a single and scored three runs. Jordan Smith also had a single.

Joseph Norton (0-2) took the loss in relief of Tyler Coker.

Ryan Woods got the win for the Panthers, 4-3.

Union’s bats erupted for eight hits in Saturday’s second game, but the ‘Jackets were unable to tame the Tigers.

Leading 6-2, Southeast took control with five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Brandon Kennedy had a single and a double for Union, 2-6, with Trey Sistrunk getting a pair of singles. Roderick Hawkins, Jordan Smith, Jay Thomas, and Tyler Germany each had one single.

Kennedy (0-2) took the loss.

Southeast got three singles from Addison Swink, a single and a double from Trey Coker, a pair of singles from Shelby Mosely, and a double from Noah Greer.

Mosely got the win as the Tigers picked up their third victory of the season.
